I remember a time when you could turn on Discovery Channel, and actually learn something.
Those were the good old days.

Though if DSC presented this as a fictional dramatic work (which it is) rather than holding up this farce that it's reality, I don't think anyone would hold it against them for properly branching into scripted programming.

I have watched every episode of this series.

The more I watch it the less I believe any of it. I am pretty sure it is the most fabricated "reality" show on TV. Based on the camera work (i.e. cameras that happen to be there) I suspect that every single scene showing any kind of violence, like blowing up a carriage or smashing windows on a truck is fabricated.

I also think now all of the amish are just actors. Levi and his crew probably are or were legitimate amish at some point but now are totally removed from the community.

I watch this show now as a mokumentary, like Reno 911 or Trailer Park Boys. Seeing it in that light I can find it enjoyable.

Discovery is a farce of a channel now. I caught a couple minutes of Tickle, some hick who gained notoriety in the fake moonshiners show and now runs a fake store front to sell moonshine, which is obviously water and not real whatsoever.

There is also Porter Ridge, Discovery's version of rednecks to compete with Duck Dynasty, its "star" being a guy who is barely intelligible (thus captioned, like honey boo boo) and rarely wears a shirt and owns a junk yard.

It is like idiocracy, in which stupid people laugh at even stupider people doing stupid things. I have a self-awareness about it because although I won't watch the redneck shows, I find Amish Mafia delightfully addictive.

And what would a tv show/movie about gangs be without at least one cute woman. I'm assuming there's a pretty female on it. Only watched a few minutes of one or two eps.

Wouldn't the use of firearms preclude them from being truly Amish? They would then be mafia people dressed like Amish preying on the Amish.

The show is funny if you take it for what it is. I was laughing out loud so hard when they played the clip of upcoming episodes that ends with a horse pulled carriage blowing up in some massive explosion that there was no chance I believed it was "real". It's like watching the first half of District 9; made up fictional mocumentary.

+1.

The Snopes article had a good phrase, Hollywood Amishsploitation (or close).

I'm guessing the Amish make for a pretty easy target. They don't own televisions, so they aren't likely to speak out to any inaccuracies or rebuke how they're being presented by Hollywood. And even if they did own televisions, they likely would not raise a big media storm about it because it is their way to keep problems and resolutions private.

I deserve that.

Sophitia what you just said I have heard that about them. They don't know half the silly shit that is going on.

To answer the question above about guns jolin is a mnenonite and so u like the Amish he apparently has wide leeway as one of Levi's foot soldiers to do what he wants. The best character in the show must be the axe wielding midget who rides a Shetland pony or Merlin, the wildly unstable guy who makes a particular point of asking Goe for guidance before doing his insane nonsense.

Fuck. Discovery Channel still shows this horseshit?!

The network should have been shamed into never showing this kind of thing again. As television viewers, we have failed to make our opinions known. We must make a bigger stink.

if you have ever been to Lancaster PA you would know its all bullshit. The show makes it appear the Amish are on a island secluded from the "English" lol they are not. they have a lot of interaction with us English, hell the last time i was there 3 weeks ago there were buggies parked at the turkey hill convenience stores. Hell even that hag, Ester was working at a turkey hill store that was a few blocks from our Lancaster office.

Yeah, the so called "learning" and "science" networks on TV have almost all gone insane. Perhaps the worst is the History Channel that devotes a ridiculous amount of airtime to Aliens.

Let's face it folks, virtually ALL these reality programs are scripted and carefully edited to paint a picture so utterly devoid of truth and reality it's shameful.

Even outfits like the Weather Channel devotes way too much time each day to stupid reality programming and you can go many uninterrupted hours without a single weather update. I was glad when DirecTV removed them from the lineup though it appears they've just recently been returned.

Add in CNN which also spams us with hours of Anthony Bourdain etc

TV mostly sucks and it's sucking more and more each day -- Kardashians anyone?

How do these shows work, is it really just acting? Like Moonshiners, I can't imagine people doing something illegal would want to roll with the idea of doing a show on it, wouldn't the cops be all over that and try to bust them?

I like the one where they used the motorhome's water tank to store the moonshine though. That is pure genius. Moonshine on tap! LOL
