Winchester 12 ga AA Target Load shotshells at Kmart. Regular price $6.97 on clearance for $3.00.
Don't know if this is national or not. UPC on receipt is 02089200441.

Also, Winchester Wildcat .22 have been on clearance for a long time at 50 cents a box, but there still may be some around.

The one time I shot this type of Winchester it jammed the shotgun. It was an Ithaca Model 37. I don't know if it was the ammo or if it just didn't agree with that shotgun in particular, but it's the only shotgun ammo I've had trouble with like that.

Target loads generally refer to shotgun shells with reduced power charges (sometimes called "dram" weight) and the amount of shot. Although you can certainly hunt with them, these loads are generally used for clay pidgeon events such as trap and skeet. Because of the reduced charge and shot, the recoil is a little kinder to the shooter. May not sound like much but if you are firing 100+ rounds or so at the range, it does make a difference.

Regarding the problems with the Ithaca, it could be that these shells just don't supply enough oomph to reliably operate the action. I had a 37 once in 20ga, great pointing gun and took a lot of quail with it but had occasional problems with jams from double feeding, probably ammo related but never took it in to a gunsmith. I switched to a Benelli Montefeltro and never looked back. I have never had a more reliable autoloader.

Don't know if this is national. I went to the Kmart here in New Orleans and didn't find it.

Yeah but KMart almost alwasy has wrongly advertised prices until you go to check out you will never know if it is on sale or not.

Winchester AA hauls used to be the #1 choice for trap and skeet shooters due to their ability to take multiple re-loadings. About 2 years ago Winchester changed the tapered base on the compression formed AA hauls to a thinner, cheaper one that is not as strong. I have crushed many of these new hauls using the same load I have used for years -- 1 1/8 # 7 1/2 oz shot, Winjammer Wad, Hodgen Clays (MEC bushing #33) on a MEC 650 progressive press. The old hauls still re-load perfectly, the new ones do not. Now only the Remmington Premier and Federal Gold Metal hauls re-load decently.

I had heard K Mart was getting out of the guns & ammo business. Supposedly Michael Moore took a couple of wounded Columbine students who were still carrying slugs(purchased at K Mart) in their bodies to a K Mart and demanded a refund for the slugs. Allegedly shook K Mart up so bad the were going to stop the sales of munitions. Don't know if it's true or not, but if it came from Michael Moore it could be about as true as Farenheit 911.

I so want to turn this into another Michael Moore thread. I'll resist.

As for the above MM mention and K-Mart, that could be the case. They were the same company who Rosie and Co. went after first on handgun sales. That was awhile ago, haven't heard any news recently.

At the local Wal-Mart they dropped the price of their steel shot down to extremely low clearance prices, cheaper than generic lead shot. There's not as much water fowl around here so it may just be a local thing. Best thing to do is become friends or have a friend who works at these large stores (I worked at one) and have them keep you informed on when things will get slapped with the red tag. I know about what week they do this with ammo (among other things) and jump on it. (we grabbed 3 very nice rifle covers for about 25% of their normal price a month ago)

hur hur hur

It was in Bowling for Columbine that K-Mart said they would stop selling handgun ammunition within 90 days. That was 3 years ago and they did. http://www.westword.com/issues/2001-07-12/news.html

22LR can be used in some handguns, but it's used a lot more often in rifles. And of course shotgun shells aren't handgun ammunition. AFAIK they still sell ammunition and haven't announced a phase out of shotgun or rifle ammo.

It's too bad this thread is degrading into crap.

I don't know anything about shotguns, but 50 cents for a box of .22 is great (I assume it's for a box of just 50 rounds).

I was just at the shooting range last week plinking holes in paper targets with a 22. I haven't done that in about ten years. It was fun.
