An attack or just errors?

Using Service Pack 3 XP, Avast!, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and I always thought I was fairly safe on roadrunner cable modem as a single user/no router setup but I cant figure out these issues. Is it benign technical issues or something malicious?

The last year I will lose my internet while it tries to resolve the host and I only get it back by unplugging my cable modem for a minute. Eight calls, three tech visits, a new cable modem, I still have this issue.

Google chrome starts crashing the last week. Add in Avast! now.
I get an error something about ashwebsv.exe exception breakpoint 0x80000003 which is Avast! Yeah alot of exception errors from those two.

My Event Viewer( Start, Run, and type eventvwr)

1)The avast! Web Scanner service terminiated unexpectedly.
2)I found like 50 of this error in EV which seems to correlate with the timeframe where I lose my connection:
TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts All my research shows this was SP2 issue, I have 3 though ????

Other errors listed in EV:
1)Your Computer was not able to renew its address from the network for the Network Card with network address.

2)The time service has not been able to synchronize the system time for 49152 seconds because none of the time providers has been able to provide a usable time stamp. The system clock is unsynchronized.

3) Faulting application chrome.exe, faulting module chrome.dll, fault address 0x004d1edd
4)PlayOnline application error. SourcerWatson

Possibly bad NIC. Most extreme advice... reinstall windows. Also, get a router. It will protect you better than Avast ever will.

I agree, without a router or good firewall, you are leaving yourself open. Just look at the large number of connections. That itself, seems to be a tip off. You might also consider running antimalware, antivirus & rootkit scanners, in safe mode and see what they turn up.
Something may have gotten in and turned your pc into a bot.

Yeah, I wouldnt trust that PC as far as i could throw it now having been open to the net that long. Regardless of what AV/AS/AM things you might be running. A cheap $20 router is your best defense, theres some on newegg right now that have a 5 egg rating, i would invest, then blow that guy away and start over from behind the router.

Wow, I always thought a single user with one pc using roadrunner cable modem straight from the wall jack was fine. I guess I will get a router then. Sounds like you guys are suggesting a format. ugh!
thanks

AV's don't protect you from attacks. They protect you from known possibilities of viruses. We don't see widespread problems from known attacks. In the end, you are as vulnerable as a naked man in a batting cage if you don't have at least a router.

I guess I find it odd that the last 5 years TW techs that came over to address resolving host issues never mentioned I should have a router and that broadband users can be attacked like open wifi ones. Heck even their setup guides dont mention routers.

Well there was a stent there, well it was many years ago, that routers were frowned upon. Cable companies WANTED you to put your computer RIGHT on the internet, and then pay them extra if you wanted another one added. I remember when i signed up my first cable account I hid the router from the guy that showed up so he wouldn't see it. I cant imagine they would still have that mentality, but maybe they just don't care.

Adding a router to your internet connection is like giving the naked man a body shield with a few baseball sized holes in it, lets in and out what he wants, blocks everything else that might hurt him.
