An experiment with the powerful, state of the art AMD K5

Let's say one took an AMD K5 133, put it in a motherboard that could take 768MB of PC100, gave it a 500 GB HDD that operated on UDMA 66, and say an AGP version of something like a GeForce 2 or 3.

Could such a computer be made to run windows 8? Mostly for the lulz? I know Win8 sys requirements require a far more powerful processor, but is there any way around this?

Unless 8 requires some instruction set that a k5 doesn't support, it will technically run. You could probably make coffee in the time it would take to go from login screen to home screen, but it would work.

The K5 is/was a piece of shit. It really was! Even the Cyrix PR chips had better FPU!

The K6 was much better, especially the K6-3 @500.
With 512MB SDRAM and a GeForce Ti4600 it would run Win8 but it would be slow. (duh!) You could use a seriall PATA to 1.5Gbps adapter and hook up an Intel X25 160G2 SSD to it though. But if you wanted to fly in the trenches, go with an IBM 75GXP deathstar disk. If you're gonna crash and burn, might as well coat yourself with napalm before striking that match...

You certainly could try it in a virtual machine with serious wait states if you have a lot of free time on your hands...
