Jazdzewski, 52, an employee of Wausau Supply, was driving out of town for business around 4 a.m. Jan. 28 when he spotted something on the road near the Rothschild Village Hall.

"I knew it was a money bag, and I picked it up. But there was no doubt in my mind that this thing was going back to (the village)," said Jazdzewski, of Kronenwetter.

What was inside the locked bag was more than $850,000 in cash and checks, according to city officials.

A police officer had set the bag on the trunk of a squad car and then was called to an emergency, Jazdzewski said. The bag apparently slid off the back of the car when the officer pulled away.

Rothschild Police Chief Bill Schremp declined to discuss the contents of the bag, which was lost between the Village Hall and River Valley State Bank, but he said he was grateful.

"Someone that found the bag was very honest. We are planning on doing something for him," Schremp said.

Wow.

I wonder what they are planning on doing with the cop that lost the bag though?

Well if most of it was in checks I would have gave it back too

If it was 850k in cash though, I'd probably grab the first plane to Switzerland to open several bank accounts

He must've called to mind that "Saved By the Bell" episode where they found that shoebox fulla money in the mall and then got chased around by the two shady guys while getting tickets to the U2 concert... ahhh memories...

They'll probably give him a gift certificate to Subway and a pat on the back

Right, becase some random village registers their bills, and has all kinds of dye packs and other nefarious GPS devices to track people who might steal money that fell off the back off a goddamn cop car. Jesus Christ, kid - this ain't the movies.

I would have taken it to Vegas betting with it, and converting my chips back in for cash. Hell, you wouldn't even need to bet with it... just get chips, walk around for a while, then cash the chips back in. Do this in 10-20 casinos and you would have freshly laundered monies!

yup...just do 10 grand or so at a time...i would go ahead and gamble with it a bit though...if you just get chips and then cash them in without doing anythingthat might arouse suspiscion with security...

Why the hell would you have to launder the money?

Good thing to know there are very honest people out there.

Truth be told, I wouldn't be one of them.

didnt they end up winning some contest by finding the shoebox? it was the last piece of a scavenger hunt which they werent aware of.

very similar to fresh prince episode when will, carlton, and uncle phil are out camping and get lost and find money in the cave...ended up being a scavenger contest they didnt know about as well.

Heh, I know almost exactly where that happened. I go up to that area to ski a few times a year.

It's good to see people are still honest. I think that I would have returned it, but it sure would be tempting to bust that lock open to "just have a look."

Makes you wonder though. If you did take the cash, what do you think your life would be like knowing you had a stash of cash but also had someone out there looking for the cash...and you.

I don't think you could steal the cash without ending up in a Hollywood B movie about finding yourself, because the money would have some kind of curse on it, and you'd have to go give it back with cameras rolling.

Don't forget the scrappy but loveable little girl that lives next door to you and the man-loving-lesbian-prostitute-with-a-heart-of-gold that lives across the hall.
