I currently own an ATI HD5870 and am in the process of upgrading my pc. Everything else has been decided barring the Graphic card. What card would give me a better performance boost that will last me around 1-2 years??

Are you experiencing low frames? A 5870 is a pretty powerful card, and to get a decent upgrade is going to cost a lot of money at this point. I wouldn't bother with anything less than a 7950 right now. I would grit my teeth and wait until Kepler comes out to get a better view at your options.

hmm ok. Thanks. and i was just curious. I dont have framerate issues barring a rare stutter or so. I did experience some serious issues with Skyrim. Though i guess its more the game than the hardware.

A good upgrade would be another 5870. That's what I did and couldn't be happier. Though 5870ies are quite difficult to come by - people love them for bitcoin mining. I got one from Ebay. Crossfire works great and runs BF3 on Ultra without a problem.

Perhaps when the 78xx comes out might be worth a look. According to a few reviews i have read the prices are going to be low and also going to beat 560s

you could wait for kepler or wait for the 7800 cards, the GCN based so even if RAW performance isn't much above the 5870, it should address all the 5870s weakpoints and be a more consistent performer. They could end up having alot of OC headroom like the 7900s or none like the 7700s.

I'd wait for kepler to be honest. If the 7700 are anything to go by. the 7800s aren't going to be very impressive.

I would wait. The 5870 is a great card for 1080. With kepler coming out and it may be as fast as leaked slides show the AMD 7900 series won't stand a chance. Amd's 8 series couldn't come soon enough.

There's been no real information yet, all those leaked sides are complete BS. I have a 5870 and I'm waiting for Kepler regardless.

There really is no card under $400 that will give you a worthwhile performance boost. The 5870 just won't die!

Based on your information, nothing I would suggest right now. Wait for Kepler (as others have said) and get the best single-card solution for ~$300-$350. Get at least 2GB RAM, and you should be good to go.

If you can get another 5870 for a bargain, thats a good option too.

You don't need to upgrade your 5870. It blows to socks of my GTX 460 1GB and I don't need to upgrade for a coupla years. Get another 5870 for some CrossFireX goodness.

Agreed wait until Nvidia comes out and see what they have to offer. Besides I'm sure that there will be a price break when competition comes out. By waiting the month of two you'll most likely save around 100 bucks I assume

I would advise him against a second 5870. They're hard to get, somewhat expensive and it will be a used card. The raw power would be great, but any card for gaming now days I think should be 2GB+ VRAM. Games like BF3 and Metro 2033 eat up VRAM and getting 2GB will help future proof your GPU.

Not to mention all the Crossfire issues, Microsutter, Caps and drivers issues No thanks.

There is a reason I stick to single Gpu's.

As most everybody else said, I would hold off. There aren't many if any games you can't max out with at least 40+ fps at 1080. Most should run well over 60.

Get whatever Kepler based card you can get for $300-400.

AMD is taking the mick with current 7000 series pricing. Let's just hope it doesn't give Nvidia the idea to do the same.

I would avoid buying another 5870 as you're only going to find inflated prices aimed at bitcoin miners. The scaling will be good, but it will be weighed down by any heavy DirectX 11 games. Just wait until Nvidia can supply their response to AMD's 7900 series.

Is your 5870 currently too slow for your gaming needs? 1080p isn't "too" stressful for a 5870.

I upgraded from a 5870 to a 7970 and am very happy. Granted, I game at 2560x1600 so the 5870 was just way too slow.

Batman AC, Metro and BF3 will bring a 5870 under 30 fps at 1080p. I don't consider a 7970 a realistic ugrade path from a 5870. According to ebay the avg selling price of a 5870 is 193 bucks. That's a far cry from 550.
