One solution is you can get a video capture device, Pinnacle is a good brand. something like this.
Another is to upgrade your camcorder to a MiniDV format, that has analog inputs. the new camcorder will just act like a bridge, and send everything digitally to your computer via firewire. This is the solution that I will be using. The Sony DCR-TRV22 can do this.
I'm not sure of the quality that AIW cards capture at, that's something to watch out for if you want to preserve the 8MM quality and burn to DVDs.
the most cost effective way is to go with a PCI video capture card, as suggested above, but a cheaper model. something like this Leadtek "DELUXE" TV2000XP, PCI TV/FM Tuner Card for $50 shipped. i have this card and it works fine with my Hi8 (SVHS) camera. plus, it's a tv card too, which is a neat bonus.
as for editing, Windows Movie Maker 2 works well enough, and it's free if you have Windows. i've tried some other capture software, but found most too complex and bloated for a simple video capture.
Crapito, card ordered...any more tips on set up...use? I'll be mostly wanting to edit video shot on my motorcycle captured via bullet cam and recorded on a Sony Hi-8 camcorder. I've been told Vegas 4 is good...but more on Windows please. I am running XP-Pro. Thanks again.
For anyone else looking to get a capture card out there. I had 3 of them...
Dazzle, Pinnacle, and then the Winfast 2000 XP Deluxe and I liked it the best.
Don't let the $50 price make you think its a cheap card, it works great.
