They don't give you hyperthreading on any of the other CPU's either, you gots to pay to play with those features. AMD gives you free cores, sometimes.

Great performance for a projected $196 price, it's actually close to i7 in a lot of scenarios.

my only hesitation w/ Lynfield in that there is no Gulftown counterpart. However, I would definitely jump on it if I can find a good combo deal (like a ~$250 frys combo w/ a decent overclocking board).

Was really excited to see that Anand had this article up. Sounds like a really good deal. Personally I would go with the 2.84ghz model since it will have h.t. enabled. I will be willing to fork over the cash for one of these since it will have cheaper mobo prices as well. Im pretty sure memory prices will be cheaper also since it uses dual channel. So glad I waited.

Looking at the gaming benchies and price/performance, it appears we may very well have a migration path for our much beloved Q6600's...

Why is the i5 at 2.66Ghz slower than the i7? Even when hyperthreading is on for both?

third memory channel is one possibility, fox5.

Looks impressive, still not interested.

I may have to try this. I haven't done intel since the p4b and p4c days. I have a fear of land grid array chips for an odd reason... never tried installing one. If this is price competitive with the amd's, i may have to waste some bonus money at the end of the year.

LGA chips are actually much safer and easier to install. Less bent pins.

And with what they are saying now with discontinuing low end parts on the X58 setup, this looks like where most of us are headed.

i think its a mixed bag really.

lga chips are more durable sure, but you can bend those pins in the socket . Most people do not remove and install cpus outside of the initial time so in that case it doesnt matter.

also a lot of people do not like lga 775 coolers as they can fall off if they use the retail style spring clips, whereas all am2/am3 sockets have a brace that goes through the back of the board.

I'd rather get an i7 setup now for not very much more and step up from my P965/E6600 @ 3.6GHz.

i7 920 - $199 + tax
Gigabyte EX58-UD3R - $150
Xigmatek DK SV1283V - $41.99
OCZ Platinum XTC DDR3-1600 (1.65V, 7-7-7-24) - $70

TOTAL = ~$465

I basically need a CPU/MB/RAM combo to serve as a fileserver and the 'ol 965P-DS3 (Rev 1.0 baby!) seems up to the task. So for $465 (the same or less than I originally paid for the E6600, 965P-DS3, 2GB DDR2-667 and AC Freezer 7 Pro) I get an insanely powerful setup NOW and don't have to wait for mobo/BIOSes to mature, since I expect the same teething issues as when the i7 first came out.

Completely agree about the coolers. I don't use the spring clips as a rule.

The only thing about that that I would worry about would be the upgrade path. X58 is going to be a top shelf performer with top shelf prices. Sounds like minimum $500 procs from here on out, with preliminary Lynnfield benches being so high.

That's true, what with Intel axing the 920 and 940. It's a bass ackwards situation where the upgrade path is limited because the platform is technologically superior

I don't understand why they can't just cripple it to save costs. 775 and AM2+ scale from $50 to over $200 because the boards have different chipsets, so why can't they do that this time?

I wish Anand would write more of the articles for the site. I really like his writing style.

That was my first thought when I saw the pic. You can take this HSF and shove it

man...

im gonna just build an i7 HTPC with a dedicated VideoCard.

They havent shown any advantage of the IGP on the i5, which the processor was designed for.

and i7 stuff is easier for me to come by then i5 stuff. :

BTW i am expected to get gulftown, so expect another mini review of it when i recieve it.

No ETA at the moment.

What is the i5 supposed to do to make the IGP more efficient? Perform some vertex shading on otherwise idle cores? Does it have some sort of Larrabee element? :Q

I'm actually quite skeptical that intel can really do much to boost their IGP solution short of re-engineering them, putting a midrange GPU in there, and add GDDR5 memory slots directly to the motherboard. If they did that, they would save consumers $$$ and could put ATi and NV out of business.

I want a release date and some prices on cpu and mobos.
I am waiting to do a new build and I think I am gonna do a build at the right time for once

Isn't the release date Sept 1? And you can build an i7 rig for pretty much the same price right now (see my earlier post).

In my personal opinion, giving clock speed with model number is bit misleading for i7. Almost all the time, it seems to run at higher clock speed than specified speed. Based on Anand?s article 2.93 processor will run between 3.2-3.6 Ghz. They could have called this as 3.6Ghz processor that will under clock to save power when cores are idle/less work. All the modern processors do under clock one way or another anyway. It is not as if I hate i7 processor, I like this processor. I only hate what I feel as a Marketing Name. AMD?s marketing team could call Phenom 2 as 800Mhz processor that will over clock to 3.2Ghz when required. My 2 cents.
