LGA chips are actually much safer and easier to install. Less bent pins.
And with what they are saying now with discontinuing low end parts on the X58 setup, this looks like where most of us are headed.

i think its a mixed bag really.
lga chips are more durable sure, but you can bend those pins in the socket . Most people do not remove and install cpus outside of the initial time so in that case it doesnt matter.
also a lot of people do not like lga 775 coolers as they can fall off if they use the retail style spring clips, whereas all am2/am3 sockets have a brace that goes through the back of the board.
I'd rather get an i7 setup now for not very much more and step up from my P965/E6600 @ 3.6GHz.
i7 920 - $199 + tax
Gigabyte EX58-UD3R - $150
Xigmatek DK SV1283V - $41.99
OCZ Platinum XTC DDR3-1600 (1.65V, 7-7-7-24) - $70
TOTAL = ~$465
I basically need a CPU/MB/RAM combo to serve as a fileserver and the 'ol 965P-DS3 (Rev 1.0 baby!) seems up to the task. So for $465 (the same or less than I originally paid for the E6600, 965P-DS3, 2GB DDR2-667 and AC Freezer 7 Pro) I get an insanely powerful setup NOW and don't have to wait for mobo/BIOSes to mature, since I expect the same teething issues as when the i7 first came out.
That's true, what with Intel axing the 920 and 940. It's a bass ackwards situation where the upgrade path is limited because the platform is technologically superiorOriginally posted by: Zensal
The only thing about that that I would worry about would be the upgrade path. X58 is going to be a top shelf performer with top shelf prices. Sounds like minimum $500 procs from here on out, with preliminary Lynnfield benches being so high.

That was my first thought when I saw the pic. You can take this HSF and shove itOriginally posted by: ShawnD1

They havent shown any advantage of the IGP on the i5, which the processor was designed for.
Isn't the release date Sept 1? And you can build an i7 rig for pretty much the same price right now (see my earlier post).Originally posted by: Bman123
I want a release date and some prices on cpu and mobos.
I am waiting to do a new build and I think I am gonna do a build at the right time for once
