I'm sorry, but both wasssup and ygreenkitty hit the nail on the head, so to speak. The information that is being collected is pure demographic data aimed at determining our purchasing power - there's not one question in there that could be truthfully used to "better serve you and continue to bring the best content to you". The data that are being collected are the type of data that are used in marketing/promoting a site to advertisers, marketers, etc., or in some instances compiled and sold to telemerketing groups for a fee (although I seriously doubt the latter is the case here). Just look at the following:
About You
Does whether I am male or female really make a difference here - it does if you're trying to "sell" demographic information about your website for commercial purposes. If there are more females here than males, does that mean we're going to go to a "pretty pink and powder-puff blue" motif? I don't think so. And of what value could information on education level and income be in "structuring" what kind of information is brought to this website? Does it mean that Anand will go to only reviewing "hi-priced, hi-tech" items if the survey shows our pocketbooks are skewed in that direction? I hope not....
Employment Status
Again, this is purely for marketing purposes - there is nothing here that truly asks a question on how AnandTech could better structure, operate, or design the website for our use - as the survey implies. It's the resulting data such as, "27-percent of our membership base are involved in making purchasing decisions within their organization, of which more than one-half are involved in acquisition decisions that total $100,000 or more annually". How is knowing whether my company has 10 employees or 10,000 employees going to influence how this website is run or operated? It's not! What influences how this website is run is the number of "hits" the various sections receive on a daily basis....
djchemistry - while I agree to some extent with what you've said - that Anand has provided us something no other site on the web offers (although others offer some of what this site does) - I think he at least owes it to us to be honest in why he's trying to collect the data. The survey is clearly targeted at collecting data on our purchasing power both personally and professionally. I'm sorry, but I just don't see a single question in this survey that's geared towards anything but that.
Now if Anand is trying to collect the data, and in turn use that data to bring in advertising revenue, which turn will (partially) be used to provide something back to this website - then tell me so. Be honest about why [you're] trying to collect the data and I'll participate. Try to guise this in a "[we're] doing this to make things better for you" and I'll respectfully pass....
