Ahem. If Bentleys were so great, their marketshare would be higher, too. Heck, if Chryslers were that great, their marketshare would be greater too. I mean, it's not like people wouldn't want a Bentley over a Toyota or Kia or Honda, right?
It would be pathetic, if Apple wouldn't manage to make a profit. But they do. They must be doing something right then (catering a niche noone else does). I'm not saying they're on the same level Bentleys are, just different. And as long as some people like that, Apple will sell Macs.
Now, as for marketshare, there's a difference between, say, Japan, USA, European and worldwide marketshare. Inevitably, the worldwide marketshare will get lower and lower. Why? Because the one billion potential Indian computer users and the one billion potential Chinese computer users, along with the potential Russian and African users and to some extent South American users, can't even afford a $1000 computer. They can afford a $400 one, though. So unless Apple risks their entire company by betting on a $400 Mac which they would initially need to sell at a loss, their market share will get lower and lower. Who knows, maybe Apple will do it some day, when they have enough cash on the side, but I think it will only happen after Steve.
