Anandtech and SPAM email

Why is it that as soon as I created an account for the forum I started to receive SPAM email?!? I created an email account just for this so I know it's not anything else. Anybody else have this problem?

AFAIK AnandTech doesn't sign you up for spam.

If your email is visible in your profile then it is possible that it was harvested for spam. I have an account strictly for this forum and I have gotten 2 spam emails in it the entire time I have had it visible. It looks like yours is hidden, so that shouldn't be a problem.

If the email you got came from [something]@anandtech.com, then that isn't spam. The Mods occasionally send you emails if they move your threads or vacation/ban you, etc. They don't just email you for no reason.

If you have a common email domain or a generic name, then it is likely that the spammers just got it through guess and check. For example, even if they never released it to anyone, I bet mark@yahoo.com or jen@gmail.com get tons of spam. Having an email address like [genericName]@[genericDomain].com is just asking to be spammed.

If none of this applies to you then I don't know what to tell you. Maybe someone who knows your email address signed you up for spam as a joke.

Thanks for the timely response Kyteland. My email is not a generic one. It's actually s8v4ovic@................net. Perhaps it could've been randomly generated but my other account at the same domain gets no spam. As far as someone signing me up as a joke is highly UNlikely as I just created the account for this forum and NObody I know knows of it. Anyhoot thanks again Kyteland.

I have not gotten Spam e-mail via my AT account.

I have noticed that I have a couple of Yahoo accounts that get spam mail via generated accounts.

I can look at the recepients and see that it is a flood of addresses, each offset by one number or digit.

Your welcome, but your hunch was wrong. I did do a search for "anandtech" and "spam" but couldn't find anything about AT being responsible so that's why I asked. I guess some people on this forum are helpful and some aren't.

I put "spam" in the search window and got this thread:
The Froums have been spam harvested which has exactly the same question. "I use dispoable email adreess and the one i gave only to anandtech has now started reciving spam. anyone else goten this?"

In there Jason says "Guys, there is really nothing we can do about this. You put text in the emails to try and stop the spammers they just adjust their scripts. The only solution is proper spam detection on the client end of things, and there are tonnes of solutions out there. If you think there is a solution, post it please. "

Not hard to find or read.

Because if he would have searched, he would have found numerous threads on the issue.
I was curious if he did search because 90% of the questions asked here have already been answered.

You have recieved good answers to your inquiry, but as a very new member of this forum, there is no way your recieving spam has anything to do with this forum. Forums do not promote spam and will not survive long if they do.

My email has been "hidden" the whole time. It is the default setting for the forum if I'm not mistaken.
