It would be nice to see stock GTX core + GTX 512Mem and stock GTX mem with GTX-512 core speed to see whether the increase in memory or core clock is most helpful.

you could argue ATi never took it from nvidia as the X1800XT wasn't available.

Don't crap on ATI, guys, remember a time when nVidia was putting out crap and ATI was stomping all over them with their new Radeons?

Things go back and forth, this round nVidia has clearly won.

I could just as easily question this thing's availability. And look - nobody is whining about it's heavy power draw or dual slot cooling! Must not be important anymore starting today...

Older forceplatforms, different forcewares for the 256mb and 512mb cards, testing@10x7 no AA/AF...WTF M8!?!

And why didn't Derek use HL2 instead of DoD:Source???

You are right, but also it looks like nVidia had ATi's number from the start, some of the websites that pulled the heatsinks off these badboys reported they were made in August....just after the release of the first GTX and way before ATI's offering, they knew and they were waiting til the timing was right to just absolutely steal the crown from ATI, saavy business by nVidia for sure!

I think when people say shame on ATI they say it because ATI had 6 months to do something and couldnt, they brought out an impressive product but it was still only 16 pipes and now when you stack it up against 24 pipes with higher clocks it gets beaten like a red-headed step child. ATI is lucky nvidia didnt make this a 90nm product because I imagine the clock speeds would be even higher....I for one am hoping ATI has a 24 pipe product somewhere to at least compete.

That would severely hurt the x1800 sales - I think they should just release an XT PE or some vendor OC'd cards close to 700mhz. It would allow them to keep up with the 512gtx and not rush the r580 launch. Also, looks like it still takes a smaller hit from AA then the 512gtx with faster mem, so they just need to OC the core.

No one cares when your at the top. When its a draw you look at other things, heat, power usage, dual slot cooling. I admit that the X1800XT was a good fast card but nothing about it made it very enjoyable to me. The XT may or may not have been a better performer in your games but the 7800GTX 512 destroys everything in every game and alot of time beats two of them in terms of the GT.

Why does that matter? Some people here seem to bash Derek, but you really insult Anand when you do that. If he was as bad as you say, don't ya think Anand would have um... "fired" him? So, you insult Anand when you rip on the writers that he has sanctioned.

vindicated how? everyone knew the "ultra" would beat the x1800xt.
[duh]

most of his other predictions re: ATI turn out to be FUD

. . . and i guess it's ati's turn for an x1800xtPE . . . 1GB vRAM . . . $699 . . . ?

edited the 'm' was where the 'g' should have been

Can you just give credit where credit is due? Or is it very painful for you? MANY people had doubts that the GTX would be a higher clocked card and just a regular GTX with 1200MHz 512. Rollo stated this was not the case, and people said, I'll believe it when I see it totally slinging the mud and blowing him off. Lets just get along ok? all of us.

Edit ** Darn double post... The lag today has been killing me. Anyway, if your intent was not to rip on Derek, then this isn't directed at you

I don't care if Nvidia screwed ATI over with a 128 pip design. Its our job as consumers to make choice and have our feelings heard when a company screws up. Do you think that Nvidia would have gone this route if everyone still purchased the 5800U just because it was Nvidia, No. Seriously Nvidia screwed up on the 5800 and were caught of guard but they on every release have been paying attention to the complaints of everybody. Last gen was the worse in the history of gaming for product availability, no look at Nvidia the 512 was available before it was announced (a screwup yes but still available).

So with Ati, you have to crap on them for availability, for having a dual slot color when the competition only had one. The 512 is heads above heels better then the XT but the XT may have only been a bit ahead of the GTX and not even always. They need to be crapped on for the lack of a SLI (like) option in 1.5 years, yet they keep showing us the same thing over and over again saying please wait for it. They need to be crapped on making us wait and wait and wait for any serious competition, and then to be caught with their pants down yet again. This isn't even for the high end only as well, Tell me where I can get a X1600XT, I can't find one yet they announced it back in October. I am sure Nvidia would love to talk abou the 7600 and 7200 that will be released with the Refresh G70 but they won't till its ready.

Tom's was able to bench it.

I guess the jsut wanted to test the engine, not the game. So I guess it would be either DoD or Lost Coast. Don't think there would be much difference.

Not as heavy as Ati's power draw...

I have looked through the whole article and don't see anything about the size of the X1800. Did they test the 256 or 512 version?! I would assume they tested the 512 otherwise the results would obviously favor the 7800 GTX.
The reason I ask is because the 7800 (256) results are so similar to the X1800 (???)

Can anyone verify the tests were run with a 512Meg X1800 XT?

Newbie
Yes, it was a 512MB X1800XT. Funny enough, we don't even have a 256MB version on our hands.

I am really gonna get flamed for this but here goes.
I looked at the adand review and thought that yes the X1800 got kicked about.
BUT
Anand dont show minimum frames..
I would really like people to look at the driverheaven review...I know it is a ATI mainly site but it sheds a different light. Minimum frames really do matter......and they did a review and guess what they saw.....similar results to toms although not as much but the ATI card got 904Mhz on the memory. and really got stuck into FEAR.
Just have a look and see what you think......also consider that the 256MB version of the XT is coming out at a lower price with minimum performance loss.
For now the winner is Nvidia but that is not the whole story.
P.s. total linkage http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews/7800512dhreview/

I had wrong link first time.
