Well, looks like the fastest one of the bunch is that '02 M3 SMG so far, with my E39 (all stock) a close 2nd.

I actually thought the M5s were faster? I looked at getting one, but couldn't hang with the gas mileage, and the M3 is already quite a bit bigger than what I was used to driving.

Well, I don't have an SMG, and the M5 is quite a bit heavier than the M3. So the '02 M3 SMG should be easily capable of touching mid-high 4s in the 0-60, I'm more in the range of 4.9/5.0. I love the big wide stance of this thing, and it has room for my 13-month old, so it's fine for me.

Ah : http://www.caranddriver.com/ar..._id=1878&page_number=2

and

http://www.motortrend.com/road...w_m5_mercedes_e55_amg/

So, should be hellishly close. But I believe modifying the M3 for better performance is much easier than what I can do with mine. I'm not modding anything, as this is my daily driver.

EDIT: Additional note, the MT team got a 4.6 0-60 out of their '02 M5. I have quite a lot of driving experience, but I seriously doubt I have the skill to extract that kind of time on a regular basis. I'm also somewhat apprehensive about accidentally launching too hard and leaving half my rear tires on the ground behind me. So, it's better than even odds that I'd have a seriously hard time matching an M3 SMG.

Actually, Z4 M is faster than both, with equal drivers.

M3 Comp Coupe: 0-60: 4.8, 0-100: 12.0, 1/4 mile: 13.4 @ 105.6mph, 60-0 (ft): 114, 80-0 (ft): 196, 200-ft skidpad: 0.88g

Z4 M Roadster: 0-60: 4.7, 0-100: 11.5, 1/4 mile: 13.2 @ 107.9mph, 60-0 (ft): 115, 80-0 (ft): 208, 200-ft skidpad: 0.89g

Nurburgring!

8:15 ---149.82 km/h ?- BMW Z4 M Roadster,
8:28 --- 145.98 km/h -- BMW E39 M5

Touche! I also saw a M3 vs. M5 on a technical circuit, and the M3 handily won. The Z4-M and M3 are true sports cars. The M5 is more of a muscle car, particularly my E39. The new M5 is more track-worthy, but the iDrive and lower torque sort of put me off.

You know, another critical aspect that people don't give enough respect to as far as 'Ring times. BRAKES. Single-stop measurements do not tell the story. It's the fade from heat as time goes on. Giant heavy monsters like my M5 suffer much more during prolonged hard usage than lighter sports cars on tracks like the 'Ring, HP be damned.

Nice! Are you going for one of the lightweight versions?

The 95LTW is extremely rare and still goes for 40K+. Definitely not worth it if your not looking at the car for the collectors value of it. Probably gonna get a OBD1 95 with the 3.0L because I want to turbo the car by the end of the summer. But really I'm not set on any certain year as long as it is in great condition and under 100K miles. They've come a long way in tuning the 3.2L OBDII car so it won't be that much of a hurdle when modding like it used to be. I really want an Avus car so 95 is my only choice, however, I will settle for Cosmos or Alpine.

EDIT: Or even Estoril Blue
