2001 M3 Coupe

Thinking about picking up an 03.5->05 M3. Can anyone tell me how functional the navi is? Coming from an TL which, imho, has one of the best factory nav's out there (I like it better than the Garmin I have in the Jeep and a lot of people like Garmin) I want to get factory nav but not if it sucks.

BMW navigation is pretty poor, IMHO.

I have the Mk3, not the Mk4 and even that is very good IMHO. I cannot add POI's though, I have to rely on those provided by BMW.

I don't own a BMW, yet, but I've driven several.

I've found the Navi to be a bit clumsy, and in hindsight I think if I had to do things over again I'd get my mom to stick with the stock deck instead of wasting the markup on the Navi, and pull out the stock deck after we picked up the car and put in an aftermarket navigation/media system.

I know a guy who had an 01 M3 and the navi in that was like a game of asteroids. Looked horrible.

Sounds good. This one was north of £40k. Yes, pounds... They had an e92 M3 for £53k that I would take before I drop 40+ on a 1 series.

For those prices, I agree. But at $35k, the 135i coupe is pitted squarely against the STI and Evo here in the States, where it kicks both their asses in just about every category imaginable (except bad weather driving).
The clincher for me is that N54. With a simple reflash, it's putting down more than 400 lb-ft... at 1500 rpm! :Q

I find it amusing when people make this car out to be something it isn't...

A simple look at some performance figures, which IMO is a very important category if you say the 135i is pitted against the Evo and Sti, will tell another story...

The STi is on par if not slightly quicker than the 135i at the end of the quarter mile and its slalom and skidpad are definitely better as well. Not to mention the AWD is superior to RWD in daily driving. Where exactly is the 135i "kicking ass" besides interior build quality and luxury?

RWD vs. AWD isn't much of an argument.

135i kick a** in weight distribution. And 135i comes with 50k free maintenance. Not a bad deal if you take everything into consideration. And how about insurance?

1975 2002, 87,000 miles ( yes actual ) custom turbo setup on a standalone fuel/spark ( megasquirt ) with water/meth injection, currently pushing 22psi and maxing out 42# injectors ( 280ish WHP range ) Trust me when I say this is the quickest ( up to 110mph ) BMW in this post so far.

BTW, I don't know why people keep trashing idrive. They must be old people who've never used a computer. I learned it within 10 minutes. If there's one negative, it's that it takes a few steps getting to where you want sometimes. Kinda like going from Palm to Windows Mobile (which I also did recently). But in no way is it a negative for the vehicle imo. The menus are responsive and the controller knob has perfect placement while driving.

I dislike it with a passion, and I'm not an old person, at a certain point too many gadgets are frustrating.

It was 03, AFAIK. The Nav in the 01 I had was running V16.1 software. The Mk3 takes up to v24 software that anyone can find online, and if not someone will sell you a couple of CD's prep'd with the firmware and the 'Key' CD to do the job yourself. Mine looks much better and has many more features with the update. The difference is night and day. The GFX are not great until the 'perspective mode' update came in. That is only on MK4 units and above.

rh71, congrats!!!! I know what you mean, my Mom has a 2006 325i sedan that she just gave back, loved that car but now having my own and driving around I can't imagine going down to a non-performance type car

I think I will be buying my first BMW next weekend. '06 330i with Sport, Premium, and Cold packages and OEM lip spoiler (NO active steering or i-Drive, thank you very much). 6-speed manual, sparkling graphite with black leather and burl walnut. 34K miles with warranty until December 2009 or 50K, whichever comes first. Brand new snow tires and the seller will be buying me a new set of all-seasons for installation once the weather warms up. $26K.

Thanks - I thought so too. The seller is actually driving the car up from Madison (I live in Minneapolis), and seems like a really good guy. I can't wait!

I'd say that's a big factor for an average driver...

I don't see why BMW wouldn't offer a 135xi though.
