cold & shadow - your words are exceptionally kind, though I'm not sure that I'd be a good moderator. One of the only drawbacks to being the father of a three year old daughter is that my spare time is, shall we say, somewhat limited. ;-)

An absentee moderator is not a good moderator, I always say. I think keys and apoppin will do a fine job, and they must be independently wealthy because they're always here! ;-) [just kidding guys]

one thing you guys need to realize is that most mod duties are mundane

They primarily consist of moving misplaced topics, deleting "oops wrong post" topics that clutter the first page, and locking and/or perhaps merging duplicate threads.

--and you can HELP us by letting us know what is out of place ... it will make this forum an easier place to negotiate ...
. . . we can work on a kinder, gentler Video forum later .. but rudeness has got to go!

Yeah, I would not want to mod. Then I could no longer post my opinion is such a colorful manner.

Plus I would accidentally delete Ackmed's account.

Well good luck. I think the moving of threads alone will help clear things up a bit. As far as moderating the members, it's been rather quiet around here lately.

Heh. Two NV fans, and two who have repeatedly trolled, name called, and started trouble. Nice picks. Oh well, these forums were already going downhill.

WTF??? IIRC Apoppin has and does use both brands...he is fairly unbiased (at least in conversation's I have had with him).

I reckon both Keys and Apop are good choices for moderator's...as long as the power doesn't go to their heads

I wanted sickbeast , BFG10K , munky and some other to be mods as they are more mature and been extremely acknowledgeable gpu enthusiastic.

Apoppin will be a great mod for the forum and also he is not a Nvidia fanboy. Keys on the other hand is alright but show immaturity as he thinks hardocp review have no fault.

Aye, people who actually know what they are talking about should be mods.

If you have a difference in opinion than somebody else, that doesn't automatically make you the knowledgable one and the other without knowledge. Tuteja thinks I'm immature for having a difference in opinion, and he still needs to show us EXACTLY how H review is at fault or what was done to make AMD look bad. It's all there in black and white folks. All settings shown. My own benches tells me the GTS is either dead even, or slightly faster than a 2900XT at equal settings, so I would imagine if I turned down AA a notch on the 2900XT in the games the GTS was faster in, they would be closer to equal. Don't get me wrong, the 2900XT is a very powerful card, and I imagine with newer drivers, it will only improve.

So for you Zstream, to think that I am not knowledgable about PC hardware, is a little weird. Or was that just something you felt you needed to throw out there in the heat of the moment? You tell me.

Firingsquad response
http://www.firingsquad.com/har...al_world_benchmarking/

In his article he then goes on to state:

Let's just cut to the chase. You will see a lot of gaming benchmarks today that just simply lie to you. That is right, you will see frames per second numbers that are at best total BS, and at their worst a terrible representation of what difference a new Intel Core 2 processor will make in your gaming experience.

One of their assertions for why they feel their testing methods are better than the methods used by other sites is that timedemo benchmarks are ?canned? runs, and do not include physics or AI calculations. However, this assumption is simply not true. The truthful answer is that this will vary from game-to-game. Timedemos can and do involve physics and AI calculations.

This silliness though that HardOCP is somehow doing something dramatically different than other sites simply isn?t true and it needs to stop. Clearly they haven?t reinvented the wheel when it comes to benchmarking.

To claim that what they?re doing is ?real-world? testing and that what other sites is doing is ?total BS?, ?misleading?, and ?worthless? is unfair to all other websites with Core 2 reviews. Especially in light of how narrow the scope of their ?real-world? testing was, only 3 CPUs were tested, and multi-GPU performance was never touched.

If this is what hardware journalism has resorted to, we want no part of it.

Now my mini version of hardocp style review taking result from computer base review :
I will cheery pick the games and i will tell my reader what is playable and what isn't. I will change the res rules too :

Company OF Heroes

2900XT 1600x1200 : 105.0
8800GTS 1280x1024 : 102.6

2900XT 1600x1200 4xAA/16xAF: 39.3
8800GTS 1280x1024 8xAA/16xAF: 20.7

Doom 3
8800GTS 1600x1200 8xAA/16xAF: 52.2
2900XT 2560x1600 4xAA/16xAF: 60.4

Prey
8800GTS 1280x1024 8xAA/16xAF : 45.3
2900XT 1600x1200 8xAA/16xAF : 39.0

Rainbow Six Vegas
2900XT 1600x1200 : 45
8800GTS 1280x1024 : 39

The Chronicles OF Riddick
8800gts 1280x1024 8xAA/16xAF: : 49
2900XT 1600x1200 8xAA/16xAF: : 45

In conclusion 2900XT domiants all round.

This type of review allows the editor to say anything he wants like

? The Radeon HD 2900 XT is late to the party and unfortunately is bringing with it performance that cannot compete"

Its funny when i go talk to some nvidia pr they always points me towards hardocp review and when all big monachos talk of ATI doom they always quote hardocp.

Now if you still insist on saying hardocp is reliable and thats your fav review website than i have nothing say to you anymore.

tuteja - my friend, this is a thread about the new mods and the changes to the AT policy. I know that the issue was brought up tangentially here, but wouldn't it make more sense to create a separate thread in video if you want to discuss what you feel are the shortcomings of HardOCP's benchmarking style?

Cheers.

Tuteja,

You point to CPU benches from HOCP from July 14th 2006. A firing squad article from a guy who got his panties in a bunch trying to dispute H's methods, much like you are trying to do, posted on July 20th 2006.

Even if this had something to do with what we are talking about, the G80 nor the R600 had even seen the light of day yet. Not even anywhere close.

And what is that third translated link all about? Where did you get your numbers you posted? I can't find them.

You need to redo this post so it can be understood what point you are trying to convey. It does me no good to point to CPU benches and a commentary on them, when we are talking graphics cards.

And I still need you to directly show me what H did to falsify their benches? Claiming something does not make it so automatically. Prove it. If you cannot, then leave it be. Slapping some random bench numbers in a post is not proof my friend. My own benches have shown me which card is faster. And believe me, there was no use in lying to myself about it. I know. You speculate. There is a difference.

Get back to me when you can put all these thoughts in order and actually describe what you are trying to convey here. You are all over the place.

Start a new thread if you must continue with this, and I'll move these posts over to it.

Wow, all I can say is this place has changed A LOT since I posted regularly here.

Wish I could say the same about the graphic card market

Anyways, congrats to the new mods. I haven't been on frequently enough to see for myself, but it looks like things are easier to manage now.

you have realize that ... a long time ago and in a parallel dimension, there was a Video Forum that was seriously bitter, angry, ... and sometimes rather hateful toward its posters.
--it was ruled by a clique - an inner circle - that would destroy anybody that didn't fit in or dared to ask an "inappropriate" question ... it was SO bad that particular Video Forum became a poor parody of itself that became shunned by other forum members who asked their Video questions in General Hardware. It was even left to itself - without moderation.
--Well, one rather strange member took it upon himself to play the clown and break the tension ... and it got interesting again. That's all.

so it broke ... and one thing lead to another . . . . .

How does the story end?

like all other fables

some learn ... some don't ... some adapt ... some drop by the wayside
... it is a never-ending story waiting for a hero to break the cycle

in the meantime ... while we're all waiting for the Return of the King .. there is an uneasy and enforced peace under the Stewards of the Realm.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate that.

I'm not on here enough to serve as a useful mod. I just got back from a week in Cuba, and I have a habit of not visiting AT for months at a time.

Apoppin and Keys will probably do a great job as mods. They're both here all the time, and are actually quite knowledgeable. Things should be balanced seeing as they each prefer different brands of cards.

I personally thought Duvie would make an awesome mod, along with Shimishim and DAPUNISHER.

Yes, there was an "inner circle" group here for a long time. Luckily, there were a few of us (yourself included) who were not intimidated by them. And in the end, we were eventually vindicated when their ringleader was banned (permanently banned when he tried to return after creating an alternative account).

I don't think such a situation will ever be able to redevelop now that we have active moderation of the Video forum. It was a long time in coming, but is definitely a welcome change. As others have already observed, the Video Forum has become "quiet". This is actually a GOOD thing as we can now devote more of our time and energy to video related topics and less to flame wars. The Video Forum can now become what it was originally meant to be.

Very glad to have moderation - I hope there is no nit picking with this though. Keep in mind that both of these people were our peers, they are not infallable, have tempers and say the wrong things at times too (just look through past forum threads). So, with that said, I hope they remember their roots. Best of luck.
