For the love of God, don't put any daft time limits on editing. I go back and edit my posts from years ago to help future googlers (and myself) - if the steps to fix a problem have changed, for example.

eg. http://www.portvapes.co.uk/?id=Latest-exam-1Z0-876-Dumps&exid=thread...angs-on-removing-applications-solved.2400405/

Most of the disruptive editing (backpeddling, editing posts while users are responding) is done within 5 minutes anyway, so the time limit is utterly futile and stupid.

That's a good point

ya, I know I have edited posts days later, when I notice some atrocious spelling....but I honestly don't mind a reasonable time limit on the option. Keeps people honest, but that doesn't really matter in the end.

Edit now working--score. Now onto posts per page, theme/contrast, and that obnoxious bar on the right side.

A time limit prevents you from removing stuff from a for sale thread. It prevents people from reserving the first handful of posts for a review or guide. It prevent you from keeping a guide up to date, etc.

If someone is being a tool, someone will quote the original text and there is nothing the OP can do about that, so the history is preserved any ways.

Posts per page is now a global forum setting that affects all users. Since we are unlikely to come to a consensus on how many to display, it's being left at 20 while we focus on addressing bugs and account issues. There's probably an add-on that will allow us to return posts per page to an individual user setting.

True, and it makes it even better when the OP goes back and tries to edit that post that was already quoted. Really concentrates the toolishness of the tool in question.

It would be nice if there was a link back to the sub forum at the bottom of the page, though.

Quick Navigation, the little icon just over Privacy Policy on the bottom or top right.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but it sounds like everyone except the staff wants more than 20.

"More than 20" is a pretty broad range

More than happy to increase this; just find me a number that everybody agrees on.

It'd also be nice if instead of see the OP's aviator, you went back to icons that actually mean something, like the New, Old, Replied To, etc. I really don't need to see 100 aviator's on the thread page.

Oh I see it now. On the mobile site, all the junk on the right gets put at the bottom, so you have to scroll past all of that to get to it. I was really talking about the bar at the top, that only requires one click, too.

Does anybody know how to get rid of the side bar to the right in threads? Since I view this on a 4k TV with the browser zoomed in some, it really takes up a lot of space.

Edit: Oh, it seems the only way is to disable it in some kind of CSS plugin for browsers, or to zoom in so far that it gets pushed to the bottom.

Blech. Please make the sidebar a toggle-able option. It's really useless being able to see who is online or things like that. Removing readable screen real estate just seems silly to me.

I always hated sidebars for forums. I used to run a fairly busy writing forums and so many themes loved to incorporate them, and while they look kinda schnazzy, they are functionally useless.

Edit2: It's really not an issue when viewing forums (aka thread lists) but when inside a thread it is entirely superfluous. I would recommend toggling it to off for viewthread settings but keeping it on for viewforum settings.

Point to the envelope, click "Start a New Conversation", then type the user's name. I see what you mean, though, I don't see a way to start a conversation from a user's post or profile.

From their profile page, go to the "Information" tab. The option to start a new conversation is there.

Neither of these options are correct from what I'm looking at. Here is a screenshot of what I'm seeing. As you can see, there is no option to "Start a New Conversation" anywhere. Even after typing in the recipient's name, the option still doesn't appear. Going to their information tab also doesn't show anything either. I'm beginning to wonder if it might be my browsers. I'm using the latest version of Chrome x64, and Edge on Redstone. But I don't see any conversation options anywhere

That is because you don't yet have the permissions for it; in order to send a PM/conversation on AnandTech, you have to have made at least 25 posts. This is a policy that has been in effect for some time, I believe.

Well in my actual account I am a diamond member with over 4,000 posts, but since my old password and account no longer work for whatever reason, I was forced to make a new account. I want my old account back though, which is why I wanted to PM the community manager so that he could take a look at it.

I haven't gone through this thread since I would have to page through it. The number of threads per page setting does not work. I have it set to 100 and it still displays 20.

Actually, now that I think about it, it does say threads, not posts. The old forum had a setting for the number of posts.

Posts per page is likely staying at 20 in the interest of load speed. Almost all the modern forum software platforms have a less than 25 setting here. Though we might look into possibly increasing the default of 20 at some point. (We need to see what load times are like once we have some data)

Sorry, but . . . what? Load times? If you had said something about SEO then maybe that would have made sense but . . . load times?

Likes are staying - it's part of core XenForo. You don't have to use 'em, but the kids like 'em.

Meh on that. One more vote for getting rid of "likes".

Seriously? I could run 100 posts per page in 1999 on Fusetalk when I was using Dial-up. There is no forum I am a member of that will not allow you to adjust posts per page, including others on XenoForum. 20 posts per page is incredibly annoying, especially if you are trying to find a specific thing.

Apparently there's a problem with XenForo and the way it constructs URLs of individual posts:

https://xenforo.com/community/threads/custom-posts-per-page-user-setting.19973/

newer versions of XenForo might have addressed the problem, or they might not.

Threads/page is a personal setting that you can find here: http://www.portvapes.co.uk/?id=Latest-exam-1Z0-876-Dumps&exid=account/preferences

Posts/page is currently set to 25, but we'll look into expanding this given all the requests for it.

It's surprising nobody outside of noisy users thought of it before going live with this stuff. Posts per page is fundamental to the individual user experience. The only reason to nix such a setting (outside of XenForo's funky way of producing URL links to threads) is to expose users to more ads. Fewer posts per page = more ad exposure. Imagine that.

Posts per page is now a global forum setting that affects all users. Since we are unlikely to come to a consensus on how many to display, it's being left at 20 while we focus on addressing bugs and account issues. There's probably an add-on that will allow us to return posts per page to an individual user setting.

There's this one:

https://xenforo.com/community/resources/threads-posts-and-conversations-per-page.2112/

not sure if it'll work with the current version though. It hasn't been updated since Dec. 2014. There are probably others.

Thank you, forum mods. The alerts have preferences now that allow me to set when to get an alert.
Alerts are now a lot less intrusive.

start a thread in personal forum issues. that's how we've always dealt with this issue.

Little bit more feedback for the current and future themes:
The "jump to last unread" button is really hard to hit on mobile phones and even annoying on desktops (tucked between the clickable avatar picture and the clickable thread link). Best course of action in my opinion is to make the avatar picture non-clickable.

Some feedback from me:-
  • Is there a way of reducing the height of topics in forum listings? There's a huge amount of white space margin above the thread title and below the date (a whole 1cm gap on a 24" 1080p). That's like double line spacing in Word. Could you not shrink it 10-20% or so?
  • Smilies seem to be a big step back. Can you not add the old ones back in (colbert, WTF, etc). The older "simpler" yellow ones just looked more effective and conveyed the relevant "emotion" more clearly.
  • Another vote for ditching "trophies" and "likes" here. All they do is cause some to start posting silly sh*t to get a trophy / upvoted for being snarky / saying what they think "popular opinion" wants to hear...
  • Yeah things are a little too "wall of white". Maybe add some darker tone highlight optioned themes?
  • Good to see a proper strike-through button added.
  • Is there a way to disable the "radar ping" animation of online now next to the avatar? Just show a static green circle?

Post edit time limit has been reverted to unlimited after clearing up a minor miscommunication.
^ Wise decision. It's particularly useful if you're creating a new thread that keeps track of a list of something, (eg, links to review roundups or a hardware issue that affects many people) and making the first post in the thread a summary that gets updates over a period of days/weeks/months.

I think I figured out the avatar issue: it's only taking files ~7 KB max for new uploads. I kept downscaling and trying different formats until I figured it out.

I recall the vB filesize being low, as well - my old avatar was under that - but I was trying to upload a new one that I hadn't downscaled or converted to GIF of < 7 KB. Which is a minuscule limit given the current avatar size of 96 x 96 and profile suggested minimum of 200 x 200 pixel size, so I hope it's raised to something reasonable. Even a few KB more would have accommodated all the old avatars; right now it appears all the working avatars (at least the ones I checked) are under 7 KB.

The max avatar file size is currently set to 25,000 bytes. So you should be able to upload something bigger than 7KB.

If I hover over a thread title waiting for a preview, it causes the right pane to jump up and then lock in place. It will no longer scroll in sync with the page.
