The forums add to the experience, but you have to admit the articles on the main site are truly extraordinary

i couldnt disagree more. after i read a comment about radiation from monitors being problem i stopped reading.

Thanks for the responses guys. As far as how much of the forums traffic goes back to the main site, it's actually next to nothing. The AnandTech main site has close to 2 million unique IPs that hit it every month, the Forums doesn't come close to that.

The impression count from the forums is quite respectable but that can be a double edged sword. That drives advertising impressions up obviously but these are far from targeted ads; in the ad market of two years ago the Forums could easily be self sustaining but advertisers did happen to wake up and realize that spending half million in advertising on a discussion board wouldn't result in any sort of returns unless you did some targeting. Having an incredible amount of pageviews per user also means that bandwidth is driven up considerably. A page of a thread can easily be over 200KB in size, multiply that by a few thousand people accessing it simultaneously and you can see where the pros are outweighed by the cons when it comes to the financial benefit of running a large forum.

Ah I remember the old days I'm almost done with a pretty big project I've been working on, and with classes out until the second summer session starts I've got a bit of time to spend in the forums for a change.

I for one Hardley ever go to the main site UNLESS I am researching what I want to buy or if someone askes what I think THEY should buy. ( I hate that. &quot;what's the best video card?&quot; I tell Check out anandtech. Anand has done a great Job of Keeping an open forum with a lot of leeway yet still with balance. I do not doubt that the forum is a money loser yet I do thank him for keeping it around.

Thanks Anand for a great site. It is your site and you can do with it what you want! If it was not for this site I would not know as much as I do about computers. I'm glad, other than the kick ass reviews thats why I like your site the best! The personal comments were always nice too, glad to hear you've got some more spare time and we might get them more often! So just how long until your're finsihed with school? Any plans for afterwards?

If its something you can share, just how much throughput does your site, both main and forums, use per month. I'll bet it really fills the pipes

The gravy days of big money click throughs are over, as has been said. Things are getting so dicey at Hardocp, that they ran a &quot;feeler&quot; poll a few days ago to see if their members would pay $2 mo. for access.
They then added &quot;.....we have no plans charge for access, but its nice to know that 64% said yes, they would pay&quot;

BTW, how small is the fee you are talking about? I think maybe some of the youngens would be scared off by it because they would find it hard to pay through the net.
