Anandtech Hot Deals Jargons - OD OM BB AM B&M MIR!?!?!?

Greetings Everyone,

I found this forum last year and i've been visiting many times. it's great way for people to share good/great deals happening around US and i hope people keep bringing the great deals in despite there are many other deals sites.

There is something that has been bothering me since the day i join. it's the abreviation/ jargons if you might say. There are so many short jargons that people use to indicate certain items, store. So wouldn't be great if we can compile a list for all those commonly use jargons in one topic.

For example: until now i can't figure out what B&M means. it seem used pretty much all around. Anyone would care to let me know what does B&M mean? Thanks in advance

I encourage other readers to contribute and ask questions regarding about jargons used here.

The Jargon Lists:

OD = Office Depot
OM = Office Max
BB = Best Buy
MIR = Mail In Rebate
CC = Circuit City / Credit Card ???
AMEX = American Express
CU = Comp Usa ?
PM = Price Match
BLUE = American Express Blue Chip Credit Card
SW = ???
Sams = Sam's Club
EB = Electronic Beautique (ebgames.com)
WD = Western Digital (HDD Manufacturer)

B&M == Brick and Morter
A real physical place. Or as I use to say back in 88 when I worked
parttime at a PC store: "Sure you can mailorder for less, but if
you buy it here and you're unhappy with it, you can, if all else
fails, bring it back here and drop it on my toe for satisfaction.
Try that with mailorder." All said with a smile.

And if you think about it, don't you still prefer a "B&M" where
you can browse, chat with fellow geeks, and get instant satisfaction
with you decision to buy? I guess most don't. I have tried hard
to support the few local stores we have had, but the life cycle
of hardware is so short and margins so thin, I've no doubt that
only the super stores can show a profit. For those who don't know:
profit margins on hardware (printers, monitors, cpu's, mobo) is
typically < 5% and usually 2%. Profit margins on software is,
usually, more like 30%-50% and margins on printed stock (books, mags)
100%. And where is the real profit: extended warrenties.
Ask any RS (oops, RS==Radio Shack) sales person that you know
*personally*. Its not fair to ask strangers such personal questions.

Greets,

B&M = brick and morter (meaning you can't buy it online, but rather have to go to actual store)
BB = besides Best Buy... I have seen it used for Blockbuster, but maybe we should start using Bb for Blockbuster
CC = Circuit City as you stated... not many people use it for credit card anymore, but I'm glad to see another person (besides myself) knew that it 'used' to stand for that.

indeed it is......the spelling in these threads is atrocious!!!!! PM can also mean "private message" as well as "price match". We should ask Moderator to anchor this at head of thread.

Most of the time I've seen Blockbuster Video shortened to BBV. That way, no confusion with BB (best buy).

Except for rare occasions CC and PM can still be used for both "Credit Card & Circuit City" and "Price Match and Private Message". I mean come on you can tell the context in which they are meant.

EXAMPLE: I found this great deal on a scanner at CC and I PM it with my BLUE CC with xyz company. PM me if you have any questions.

Ok, that is one extreme example.... lol

Thanks for sharing. the moderator should just cut and paste the section and make a single thread. i looked but i see the first topic by the mod and didn't mention anything about abreviations so i didn't know it's down below. Oh well, that's just my suggestion.

Now i know what B&M means! Brick & Mortar, that sound like war or sumthing.

As a former RS employee, I attest to the piss poor profit margins on most computer parts. They actually paid us LESS comission on computers than other electronics. Warranties is where it's at.
