Maybe have a toggle to hide active users Probably not "essential" data that needs to be loaded to the homepage every time. Especially if you wanted to have any useful options down there.

No branding. Have an Anandtech logo, hopefully something that lets you get to the main site as well. Which leads kind of to:

Are the forums integrated with the main site? I've always assumed they are basically separate. But you would think you could tap on the AT hamburger on the main site, hit "Forums", and then go to something that looks like it belongs to the same website. Same nav menu at the top maybe (home would lead back to forum index instead, or a listing of the sub forums) a forum search with a link for the advanced search page, etc.

The main site is actually a pretty good example of well thought out responsive design, IMO (ESPN did not use it as a template, I don't think ), but the new mobile forum is like the old phone wap site era type of stuff

Good luck

Haven't seen any changes yet, same unchangeable garbage format since the change was pushed.

..What don't you like about it, in specific terms?

I am going to "borrow" this question.

What I don't like:
- The default style button doesn't do anything for me. Is it supposed to?
- The "up" arrow should be available at the top, as well as the bottom.
- I would like an easy way to go to the normal version if I choose to do so.
What I do like:
- I like that the "new posts" selection is still there.
- I like that the pages are minimalistic, but am still able to make selections without resizing the page.
- I like having a "home" button for easy access to the top.

Appreciate all you are doing here jpishgar!

This is not a responsive design. Responsive design is a single, unified page that reflows the layout, depending on the size of the viewport. That way, you maintain one code base and one feature set. What this means for the user is consistency.

What we have here are two separate desktop and mobile sites. We end up with bugs in one and not the other, or missing features, or unwanted features, etc. The user ends up with the opposite of consistency while the dev team now has double the work.

In my professional opinion, these changes should be reverted and a new, truly responsive design should be implemented; one that maintains the option of retaining the desktop view, if that's what the user wants.

Reposting what I said in the mobile devices forum.

'I don't mind the look. (I'd prefer a dark theme)
Touch targets need to be bigger for a mobile friendly site.'

We would have rather gone with a responsive design as well. However that's simply not possible in vB 3. It's too old to support the necessary constructs for a modern responsive design, and upgrading vB is going to be a very, very big deal. Hence a separate mobile skin was needed.

And just to be clear, this was needed due to Google's mobilegeddon event - changing their search algorithms to essentially require that sites offer mobile-friendly views. That search change would have resulted in the forums being significantly demoted in search results had we not implemented a mobile skin.

On my android phone using that button does nothing. Everything still looks like it did the day of the rollout.
Be sure you're logged in.

So it's only for hits. Damn those that are actively using the forums on a day to day basis. Money reigns supreme.

Hey there forum folk!

One of the biggest requests we've heard from suggestions here on the forum has been the lack of responsive forums. A lot of users like to browse threads on the go either on their smartphone or tablet, and the forums themselves have been around for a very long time so the presentation hasn't unfortunately kept up.

Well, we're proud to announce that due to the diligent work of our tireless tech team, AnandTech forums are now responsive. Those of you viewing this thread in the smaller resolution of a smartphone or tablet will see it formatted correctly and with a streamlined visual presentation and simplified interface. The team stressed functionality over form, and while it may not be overly pleasing in terms of aesthetics, it's super-useful for AnandTeching on the go.

As safety and forum atmosphere are major considerations in our development, the mobile, responsive version also includes options for Moderators to review threads, so Mods (and myself) will also be able to do their thing without being tied down to a desktop. Additionally, if you currently use http://atforums.mobi/, you may continue to do so - nothing has changed there for those who prefer to continue using that option for mobile browsing of the AnandTech forums.

We're hoping these ongoing improvements help to upgrade and update the AnandTech Community a little further, and demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that an awesome community gets what it wants.

If you bump into any problems, issues or questions with the new responsive design for mobile platforms, don't hesitate to hit me up here.

Yours,
Joe Pishgar

Same on Android.

Also, the top ad sucks just as bad as ever.

Also links no longer work when posted from mobile.

Isn't this a tech site?

Haha I'm glad its nit just me. I really don't care what ad is at the top. I assumed it was a MS assigned ad since I'm using a windows phone. Take a look at what I see everytime in the top ad field.

Take a look at the mobile site for bimmerpost. They're on 3.7. It can certainly be done.

Wow. That is beautiful! Definitely something I would love to see here! If nothing else, the color scheme in the forums gives it a more polished look IMO.

I installed chrome on my ios7 iphone just so I could use the "request desktop" feature, as of about five minutes ago that option is no longer available and I'm forced to use this 2005 mobile version of the forums...wtf?!

Your device doesn't support iOS 8? Jailbroken?

iOS8 has enough features that I no longer want to jailbreak it, but it's pretty unstable, unfortunately. You have some unpatched vulnerabilities if you're sticking with iOS 7.

Yep, jailbroken and ios8 doesn't offer the options I need. I'm also ok with being vulnerable

chrome no longer has that option or clicking on that option in chrome doesn't serve up the regular version?

(i tried on my ios8 / chrome and "request desktop" worked as intended)
