Gotta say I'm surprised Reddit doesn't just force open the subs that went private.

They really don't care do they.

I never used reddit much, I mostly just stuck around here. Though I occasionally found some intersting stuff on there from searching, but I very rarely posted anything. Now I definitely won't be using it lol.

LOL I was a massive lurker but never got into ATOT enough to be a known name. It's funny logging back in and remembering some of the classic usernames though. Like @brianmanahan are you still writing dope pomes??

unfortunately it seems i was a child prodigy when it came to pomes

(well, maybe a man-child prodigy)

but the muse has left me over the last few years

work has had me burnt out completely for over a decade, but i hope after retire i will regain The Gift

Pretty sure I'm gonna nuke my reddit account. I'll probably decide by the weekend, and for sure before the month is over so I can use an auto deleter. I don't see it going anywhere but worse, even if there's a temporary reprieve. Fediverse is where it's at. Might not be as full, but it's better, and puts control in the hands of the users where it belongs.

-Tell me more about this auto deleter.

Would be most... Ironic... If it used the reddit API.

Edit:

Here's one

Yea, charging a ridiculous amount of money. If I told you all you had to pay me $5 a post for every post I make, how posts of mine do you think you'd see? It's a de facto ban on 3rd party apps.

Well damn boys and girls. Looks like it's time for mid 2000s forums to come back with a vengeance!!

To be honest, though, I wouldn't mind if there was some fracturing up of Reddit communities. I think peak internet discussion was during the late 90s and early-to-mid 2000s, pre web 2.0, etc.

And although my registration date here says 2005, I had a year 2000 account but forgot the password.

Yea, charging a ridiculous amount of money.

From this one Macrumors article I saw on it, the Apollo developer claimed he would have to charge roughly $2.50/mo per user for the bill. I'd agree that most users won't pay that, which is why he's giving up... but if you're using the API for some one time thing or every so often, the cost probably isn't that big of a deal.

and it does use the api, so if anyone wants to use it, it has to be before the api is shutdown.
Do you have any resources for exporting saved posts? I have saved so many informative things to "read later" over my ten years there, and they're essentially the only thing preventing me from nuking my account right now.

I don't. That isn't something I've looked into. I have some stuff saved, but I haven't looked at any of it in ages, so I figure I don't need it. I guess I should take a look just to make sure, but the quantity's small enough I could do it manually if necessary. If I run across any export tools, I'll report back.

I mean, if that's all, why not set aside some time to go through the info and save it externally? Or just leave things as they are and go back to read them later? I don't think the website is so horrible as to make that a painful experience. But I also just raw-dog Reddit on my phone's browser and it seems fine to me.

My two thoughts on that are your suggestion is easy, and pragmatic, and that's not 100% off the table for me.

My other thought, is by leaving my content, and occasionally returning, I'm adding value to their platform. I hear a lot of crying from them about money. Where's *my* payment? Without users, there is no reddit. Aside from tangible assets they acquired to service their main offering, it's worth $0 without users. They gave a big 'fuck you' to the users, so I'm inclined to return their 'fuck you', trash my toys, and leave.

I'm pretty happy with the fediverse. It might not have everything I want, but it's got what I need, and if I don't like what my instance admins are doing, I can take my toys and go elsewhere. It gives control to the user, where it belongs.

-The age old adage "If a service is free, you're the product that's bought and sold" strikes again.
