I knew I was getting a start menu update, but this new format is garbage compared to the original Win10 version. Wish it were able to be reverted.

Start menu is a work in progress. Expect additional changes.

they really should add an option for the recent docs list the same way it worked on win7 and older back (I know about recent items and whatever, but it's not the same)

If you don't like the stock start menu you can always use classic shell.
It's not that as much as Microsoft had a perfect start menu for desktops from XP to 7, then they had to change it just to make it "different." Tip MS: When you get something just right: leave it!

Start menu in tablet mode is horrible, it's like that 8/8.1 drop down apps list.

I agree with you and believe that they should've left it alone as do many other people who use these 3rd party menu apps. I very much dislike the metro menu setup even on a tablet and prefer the conventional two column look like 7 introduced.

?? It is much better in tablet mode then it was before. 8 tablet mode start was best (for a tablet, sucks for desktops).

I rather have the option to use whatever GUI I want, instead of trying to do a one menu fits all model.

I think Linux has some of the best Start Menus, forget Win95 to Win7 they are leagues behind some of the Linux Start Menus, Microsoft could learn a thing or two from Linux.

Side Note: I can understand why Microsoft changed it, ie to modernize for latest hardware, tablets, touch screen etc....However will take time to evolve just like Win95 Start Menu changed from OS to OS slightly.

Yes some people do get too hanged up on Win95 to Win7 Start Menus, they should really look at the Linux examples .

OK, looks like I figured out the problem.

first when I went to reformat my drive using Win 10 on thumbdrive, it gave me an error. I then checked the drive for problems and after hours of scanning, the drive was fine.

I then decided to check if a program was conflicting with Win 10.

I found the culprit: Asus AI Suit 3.

Once I uninstalled it the system went back to normal.

I will continue testing the system but it is acting normal so far.

Honestly, I know it will never happen, but I wish the start menu shell were scriptable. It would be nice to customize exactly which bits and pieces of functionality you could have on it.

As an aside, why am I hearing all sorts of compatibility horror stories on update installs? Did MS really change that much under the hood?

As you know, before 1607, the lock screen and login screen were different, and now in 1607 they have been unified with the same background.

Except it hasn't on one of my machines. Now the lock screen is black (with text on it, like that "Do you like what you see?" question), and only when I tap the spacebar to get the login prompt, then the background picture pops up. And it's not a gradual fade-in. It pops up immediately. So for some reason, that picture doesn't seem to be registering on the lock screen. IOW, it seems the two screens are still somewhat independent from each other in Win 10. MS cosmetically "unified" them by having them share the same background, except that background is missing on my lock screen.

And what's worse, MS has blocked deactivation of the lock screen, which for me is useless anyway.

Oh so you can't disable that stupid slide up lockscreen anymore? I rather just go straight to login screen rather than the lockscreen.

The lock screen can't be deactivated in Home and Pro, but can be deactivated in Enterprise, Server, and Education.

However, there is a workaround for Pro and maybe Home, here:

http://www.ghacks.net/2016/08/05/disable-windows-10-lock-screen/

I haven't tried the workaround since it seems unnecessarily complicated for only a partial fix. One limitation is it doesn't work for restarts, only for other times the lock screen would normally show up like when you lock the computer.

The fix that I would use would be to auto-log in and then auto lock the PC

I use AI Suite 3 and don't have any issues with it. Have you tried reinstalling since that time?
no, not yet.

like I said it could just have been one of those update things causing issues. might only have affected me for some odd reason.

maybe later I will try it out again.

WinKey+R: run: netplwiz
Uncheck the box "Users must enter a user name and password..."
Works fine on Win10 Pro, build 14393.10.

Assuming I understand you correctly, you're telling me how to get rid of the login screen.

I don't want to get rid of the login screen. I want to either get rid of the lock screen before the login screen, or else make the lock screen the same background as the login screen (as it's supposed to be). Right now my lock screen on that computer is just black.

I just researched this yesterday and the only way is through a fairly complex routine of using the task scheduler which still does not remove it from the initial startup. I don't know why they screw with stuff like this although the thinking seems to be that they want to be able to push ad's through the lock screen pic area. I rolled back to the previous build.

Post #67. Change that setting and the lock screen and the login screen will be the same and when you click on the lock screen to login it will give you a fade effect that brings up the login box instead of the old clunky shade sliding up to a different screen animation.

Anyone else get hit with the "windows locks up and you have to force shut down" issue after this update? I spent a good amount of time today trying to fix that. Finally found a reddit thread with some helpful fixes and something seemed to have worked. Have to change my default apps install location to C drive instead of a 2nd drive I use for game installs. Of all things MS can't even leave things working during an update. Then what makes no sense whatsoever is after it's installed you can change it back to another drive with no ill effects. I don't get it at all.
