Old Car:
2001 Chevy Prism
Sony Headunit w/ mp3
4 Infinity Speakers: Front 6.5, Back 6.5
Sound: I was very happy.

New Car:
1998 Honda Civic
Sony Headunit w/ mp3 (one model below the one above, but still decent)
4 Pioneer Speakers: Front 6.5, Back 6x9
Sound: Sounds muffled.

Is it the new speakers, the new head unit, or the new car, causing sound to not be as clear as the Chevy was?

Thanks,

Matt

Cheap components in the Honda, should have stayed with the Chevy. At least pull the speakers out of the chevy.

Just as an aside, I think every topic could be titled "Anandtech:" with the description below. I think it is implied that you are addressing Anandtech when you make a thread.

Cheap components? All of this is bought from the store, including the speakers.

Infinity makes better speakers than pioneer, and they might have been component versus the 3 way pioneers you have now.

Most likely new speakers, or eq settings are different.

One major thing thats different too that I didn't mention: there were no grills on top of the speakers in my chevy. The honda speakers were installed professionally, and they lift the grills on. So now, there is a piece of plastic over each speaker where in my other car there wasn't. Could this be it?

ding ding ding!
Try repositioning the speakers if you can or else resort to an after-market eq to balance out the sound. Adding additional tweeters that are facing you might also help. Although I do think that Infinity makes better speakers than Pioneer.

You mean the plastic facade over the speaker? I doubt it would matter all that much.

My bet is the pioneers are more middle heavy by default than the infinitis. Try adjusting the EQ on the headunit.

...or....perhaps the headunit, being a model below, doesn't have as sophisticated EQ functions. The combination of the two would make for a worse sounding system. Try playing with the EQ first.

Could be that's all it is. Absorption, reflection and interior volume difference.

Setup and speaker placement will play the biggest role in sound. Where were the front speakers placed in both cars? And then even if they were in the same place, different speakers have different off-axis response. I'm going to assume door mounted 6.5's in both cars? Off-axis response is going to be very important in that case.

Maybe one of your speakers is out of phase. IE: the neg is hooked up to the positive and pos it hooked to the negative, even one speaker out of phase can cause severe muffled sound and just plain sucky sounding music.
