The fact that Pearl Jam is even considered by anyone to be the greatest American rock band testifies to the mediocrity of American bands in general. If Pearl Jam were British and they were doing a British list, Pearl Jam wouldn't be close to the top 10. British bands are so much better it's not even close.

i'd suppose nirvana's low rankings stem from kurt cobain's suicide and the bad role model he seemed to be as a result. people still are huge nirvana fans, no doubt, but nirvana isn't producing any new music for obvious reasons.
