Novelty? No. But I'm willing to face the fact that things can get better over time as people learn how to do them better and better. You aren't driving a Model T are you? You aren't using an AppleII to post on this forum are you? Man can now run the 100m in under 10 seconds..
Nice analogy!

Mozart was a hack because he was making music hundreds of years a go!

Pearl Jam? I mean, I like them and all, but they don't fit into the same category as Van Halen, AC/DC, etc.

Where did they take this poll - at a minivan dealership?

The Eagles and Journey were mediocre hacks at best - and Journey had some of the weakest material ever released by a major rock band.

DMB does not play rock any more than Lionel Ritchie does.

VH were brilliant for two albums then became mediocre hacks.

No, he just never got in <Homer voice>CRAP ROCK</Homer voice>

All I know is all of their songs sound the same...I think they just had one generic song and the singer just made different droaning sounds each time time.

That's the main issue with the general public is that they only know "Alive" or "Jeremy" and think that's all there is to Pearl Jam. Go listen to songs like "Off He Goes", "Given to Fly", "Corduroy", "Wishlist", "State of Love and Trust", "Man of the Hour", and "All Those Yesterdays". You'll see that they are vasty different.

If anything they are one of the most diverse bands ever. I've heard Pearl Jam on rock/alternative, metal, classic rock, contemporary, and even country stations. They've even got some folk songs as well. But I also think this is why they don't have as large of a fan base as other bands. They tend to change their sound from one CD to the next so it's hard for the casual listener to really "get into" them.

No biggie, though. They're good. Not my personal favorite, but good. I would have voted someone else.
I've seen them in concert with RHCP and Sound Garden and both of those bands blew PJ away.

Woohoo .. There is actually 1 band I like there.
That band of course is Queensryche. The rest, ehhh, Metallica had a couple of decent songs, I could never get into anything by any of the others though.

How can PJ be considered even in the Top Ten? Is this bands that are still intact because there are literally dozens of bands from the past that dwarf PJ.

Your just pissed because Meatloaf didn't win.

You have no musical taste and are caught up in nostalgia of your past. No American band has so perfectly woven powerful lyrics, mood, and melody as well as Pearl Jam. Listen to "Black" or "Better Man". WTF from your childhood in the 60's is better than that?
Oh shut up you little plaid wearing bottom sniffer, I didn't say the 60's (though there were bands better than PJ from the 60's!) I've seen PJ before and they were good but compared to bands like the Allman Brothers, RHCP, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith, CCR, The Doors, Elvis Presley, GNR, Hendrix, Santana, Steely Dan, Van Halen and ZZ Top just to name a few they do not measure up.

A couple of decent songs?!?! How about the whole Master Of Puppets Album? For Whom the Bell Tolls? Fade to Black, One!?!

Still, Metallica shouldn't be number one, but, PJ def. not. Sounds too much like a donkey.

HEEE HAWWW! *mumbling*

LOL, so diverse means they are good? Yeah whatever.....

They change styles on every album because they aren't good at any style.

Once again, take a band like Clutch. They are "diverse" not on a album to album way but their MUSIC song by song is diverse. They are TALENTED musicians that utilize many styles in every song they play. Clutch doesn't switch styles, they ARE many styles.

PJ is just a group of old hacks that continue putting out albums by switching musical styles to try an fool people into thinking they are talented.

No really, I'm willing to give them a chance if I can hear some of their non-single stuff (I know how the music industry forces this stuff down our throats). I'm big on playing folk music and would like to hear what they put out to see if my original statement still holds water.

I would've liked to have seen Alice in Chains on the list.....definitely a power hitter of the 90's.

Honorable mentions:
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (music legend)
Soundgarden (power hitters of the 90's)
Live (just plain rock.....at least they used to)
Supertramp (not sure if they're American)
Tool (have had a huge following since their first album)
Nine Inch Nails (Trent's a genious, but I guess technically, they're considered Industrial)
