Well as some of you may know, the dude here was unemployed for a year, but finally got a job and is making money again. Everything seemed to be getting better, but earlier last week our 3 year old was diagnosed with Mental Retardation, and we were told that if we are lucky she may be on the level of a 6 year old when she is 18.

Hopefully her younger sister is spared her fate.

I am sorry to hear that, this if nothing else should motivate you to love and care for your child even more.

I'm confused. "The dude here"?

I can't tell if you're talking about yourself and your family, or someone else or something ...

Well, regardless... best wishes.

I am not going to express sympathy or condolences, Jeff. Life is, at the very least, a challenge for all of us. For some of us we are saddled with problems that most never have to face or deal with.

Love your daughter and help her to become the best she can be. You can try other medical means to determine her capabilities and may find that you have been misled.

I understand how it hurts to realize that your child won't even be average, I have done it times two.

Hang in there, life is full of inexplicable wonders.

Jeff Bridges character Lebowski in "The Big Lebowski" consistently referred to himself in the third person as "The Dude".

Bold one = :Q
Bold 2 = I disagree. Its not inexplicable wonders. Its just proof whatever controls our destiny (Fate, God, Budha, A big green clown with a wand) is nothing more then an asshole.

Seeing as you control your own destiny, don't be so hard on yourself.

Sorry this happened.

Question - How come it took til age 3 to diagnose this? Can't they figure this out from infancy?

One of my best friends growing up was mentally challenged, he wasn't supposed to be able to tie his shoes. But, his mom held him back to start school for 2 years and then sent him to regular public school. He did need tutors, but he did ok. He is a really nice guy who always thinks of other people rather than himself and he was really popular in high school. I've lost touch w/ him over the past few years, but last I heard he was doing well for himself and has a pretty hot wife

Just because a person has a handicap doesnt mean their life is ruined. Have faith and always treat your child like he/she is normal and they'll turn out fine.

Oh, he has a younger brother that is practically a genius. So, you really shouldnt worry about her younger sister.

My best wishes are with and your life. I know you will love your child and give her the support that she needs.
I remember reading something in a Stephen Covey book about how he had a child with a learning difficulty and how he and his wife were handling things wrongly. They were puttin too much emphasis on what they were supposed to be doing and not what the child really needed. If I find the book or passage, i will private message you.

I'm sure you and your wife will be seeking professional counseling to help you through this. Go to lots of support groups too. Start now and learn from other families and children on how you can help her development. Stay positive and love her like i know you will

Well mental retardation(unlike down syndrome) is not a genetic disorder, it can't be tested for untill a certain age as their are "milestones" that children are supposed to be at at certain ages. She is at the level of a 13 month old now. She doesn't/can't talk other than laughing and crying, sometimes just jibberish. She doesn't pay attention to anyone no matter what is said. She doesn't play with toys other than to put them in her mouth or if it has a button she will just repeatedly push the button. She can't feed herself by hand consistantly, let alone use a spoon.

Our 13 month old, though is more advanced than the 3 year old. She has been saying dadda since she was 6 months old, she waves bye bye, she can walk and run(to some degree), use a spoon about 50% of the time, and will respond when spoken to.

This won't change the way I think about her or love her.
