And I thought I spent too much on beer

Good beer mind you. Usually around $10 a six pack but I'll occasionally drop $16 or so on some Stone Ruinations (six pack) or those awesome drink by xx/xx/xx brews.

And then I roll across a single bottle (12oz) of a barrel aged barley wine for $14.

Just me or they trippin? Like, hard.

I get that it's not an every day beer and is something a lover of barley wines can probably savor next to a roaring fire with a copy of Tolstoy or something but when you get over $1 per oz...

I regularly will buy a liter of high end beer for $15 or so. I've seen some very high end, harder to find beers that size go for 30+ at restaurants/bars.

Why should an exceptionally high end beer cost any less than a wine? Especially if it's a beer in the 9+ ABV range.

Oh man those reviews are so pretentious. I'm sure it's a decent beer but I'll be damned if those reviews don't remind me of what would happen if I asked ATOT how to cook a steak.

A GOOD BW is hard to make and expensive. Not sure if you ever priced a used whisky barrel, but they run in the hundreds for really good ones from the better distilleries. I have several bottles that were in the $45 range and will be kept for a dozen years or so.

I favor my brew from Samuel Smith Brewery in Tadcaster England. My favorite is the Imperial Stout and second, the Taddy Porter.

eh, my beer cellar is full of 12oz and 22oz bombers that ~$30 or so. Everyone has their hobbies and I'll pay good money for good and interesting beer.

I think the most expensive (which isn't really) bottle I have is this years Bourbon County Rare, or maybe Greenman's 2013 Maceo.

I've sworn off all AB/InBev owned brews so anything Goose Island is off my list of things to buy. Its really sad, a few faves are gone forever now. The ones I will miss the most is a barleywine and a braggot from the Mill St brewery in Canada. I have 4 or so from past years that will now be stored away until a special occasion comes up.

That attitude reminds me of this song "Know It All" by Lagwagon:

"I remember you and I listening to bands that we liked
Only the songs mattered to you
But now you're a D.J. and preaching that hype
"Corporate Rock Sucks"
"You know, college radio enlightens you"

It's supposed to serve as a means to expose new bands without prejudice,
but it makes no sense
Safe harbor for the underground
'Til the alternative becomes the popular sound
The bands are good 'til they make enough cash to eat food and get a pad
Then they're sold out and their music is cliché
Because talent's exclusive to bands without pay"

If a major distributor buys out a smaller company, but keeps the people and recipes in place, I'd have little problem continuing to buy the product.

Lagunitas is 50% owned by Heineken, but I still enjoy drinking Lagunitas. Part of the reason for "selling out" was so they could expand the markets their beer reaches. Their new facility in Chicago is huge (and the tasting bar/restaurant they have is pretty cool).

If that were the case then I might agree with you. AB/INBEV is using its ownership in the distribution channel, and its size to "entice" distributors to limit the shelf space given to smaller brewers by offering rebates in the hundreds of thousands of dollar range. Effectively limiting the successes of those little brewers, you know the ones like Lagunitas, 10 Barrel, Elysian, Four Peaks and the like. Without the ability for those, at one time small startups, to have shelf space in the big distributors they would have stayed small, and not be an issue for AB. So instead of waiting until the owners are ready to hand over the keys for a few million, AB is trying to make it so that no little guy can get big. If your OK giving your hard earned cash to a company that is hell bent on destroying the little guy, have at it, not this guy. When a company gets so fucking big that its marketing company creates a super bowl ad ridiculing a product they make, I think they might be just a bit to big.

Maybe I wasn't clear. I'm not advocating for anti-competitive practices and I am not supportive of such moves. I'm just saying that there isn't something inherently wrong with a smaller company being picked up by a larger one.

No I got what you said, it's just your actions are counter to it. You can not say you are against something and then buy from the company that is doing exactly that.

I specifically stated AB/INBEV, there are other mergers out there that are great for all, but AB/INBEV buying up breweries is not on that list. It would be like AT&T owning all the cell towers manufactures and buying up all the providers under them, nothing good could come of it.

My not buying a product from a company does nothing to them, it's just I could not send one cent of my money to a company that will use it to limit another startup from gaining ground. There are just far too many great brews to pick from that are not owned by AB. I want to do my part to ensure that remains a option.

Now you're just bragging!

Young or old?

Don't think they ever bottled pliney the younger...also yeah pliney is supposed to be consumed as fresh as possible so I'd get on that. I've had 4 or 5 bottles back when I could get them up here in Washington- now they don't even distribute to Oregon any more.

You would be surprised what people will do with a growler. I've had some stuff that was never bottled shipped to me. I was just curious.

Ehh, seems like most of the bombers tend to go for like 6-16 per bottle...

I prefer to spend $10 or less on a 6 pack, but I understand the costs that go into barrel aging, and while I think barlywine is repulsively disgusting, I am not surprised by a $14 or $15 bottle.

I love sour ales, they tend to be on the pricy side due to the aging requirements...

Otherwise I like stouts, especially pretentious strong barrel aged stouts like KBS... mmmmm KBS

I paid 23 bucks for a 16oz bottle of old rasputin barrel aged XIV a few years ago.

Almost paid 22 bucks for a bottle of parabajava while visting firestone walker couple weeks ago, but decided not to. Nitro merlin on tap was quiet good.
