Hi all -
As many of you know I am an intellectual property attorney. I've been in the business for quite a while, moving from position to position every so often in order to learn new skills, improve quality of life, or other reasons. I kept moving around until about five years ago, when I joined my current firm. Shortly after joining that firm I knew it was a "unique" place among law firms, in that the culture was (for the most part) extremely relaxed. While everyone at the firm takes their job extremely seriously, almost none of us take each ourselves seriously. This has lead to an extremely open, fun, and collaborative environment - of which I am tremendously proud to be a part of.
Last weekend, I was given the great honor of being named a partner of my firm. I was and still am floored by this fact. Not because I don't think I am a good enough intellectual property attorney. But rather because I hold the current partners of the firm in such high esteem that I am extremely flattered that they consider me to be one of their peers.
I thought I would share the news as it is an exceptionally big moment in my life. And honestly, it is one I never thought would happen or thought that I wanted to happen. Indeed, I used to feel that being named partner of a law firm was like winning a pie eating contest where the prize is more pie. To some extent that statement is probably true, but I am beginning to suspect that my prior feelings were just because I was not the right fit for other firms I have worked for, and/or they were not the right fit for me.
Anyway, it feels good to advance from padawan attorney to jedi master attorney. Now I just have to avoid the dark side for the rest of my life.
TLDR - OP is a patent attorney. After 15 years in the business, he was named a partner of his law firm last weekend.
