This is ridiculous: (from autoweek)

"We've seen SUVs, LAVs (luxury activity vehicles), and LUVs (luxury utility vehicles). What's next? Cadillac's version of the Lincoln Blackwood luxury activity vehicle will debut in 2002 as the so-called UUV -- ultimate utility vehicle -- known as the EXT.

EXT will ride on a big-frame Suburban truck chassis and will offer four-door convenience and a pickup truck box behind the passenger cabin.

Using the Suburban chassis means the vehicles will be larger than the Navigator-based Blackwood so that upon introduction, these UUVs will be the largest vehicles of their kind.

Large SUVs is suck!

Umm.... If I'm not mistaken, GM already makes this vehicle. It's called a crew cab. It already comes with leather and all the bells and wistles from both Chevy and GMC, in both short and long bed styles, so what exactly is caddy going to do? Add their decals to the side and charge an extra 30k?

All for the low, low price of $78,000 (total guestimate)
And, not to mention the whopping 8 MPG HIGHWAY milage (guestimate)

I'm a small SUV owner (Jimmy), and even I fail to see how something like this is even remotely needed.

Is there really that much of a market for a $50,000+ SUV? I'm thinking that there probably isn't. When you figure in sales tax, luxury tax, and gas guzzler tax, that thing will $60,000+

BTW, Will this be an inflated version of the Explorer with the open ass end?

Seriously, who needs an Excursion for example? Piss-poor gas mileage, especially in Socal w/MTBEs, and lots of cargo space for what? Soccer balls? And, if you actually need the space, you'd probably rather have a full-size truck rather than some vehicle that's more of a marketing gimmick than anything else.

You know, this whole war of size escalation is just insane.

But, at least we know it WILL eventually end! SUV, LUV, UUV and EVENTUALLY you hit what's been around forever...RV!

Cool. I think I'll get one just to run over Yugo driving tree huggers.

All that cargo room and horsepower, how does the "UUV" get used most of the time? Bringing one guy and his coffee mug to work!

:| I hate those things. (And Russ, I don't tree-hug or drive a Yugo, LOL)

I live in suburbia, and the only people I ever see driving them are air-headed soccer moms who drive four times a day (take the kids to school, go out to lunch, run to the grocery store and pick the kids up after school). They barely know how to drive them, so they take up the whole road, block intersections and turn lanes and are just generally a pain in the butt.

Then again, if I had $80K to blow on one, I probably would, but I'd convince myself it was just so I could roll over all the Caravans and Rodeos.

Oh damn $78k and 8 mpg! At this rate it won't be long before people are commuting to work in renovated 18-wheeler trucks. Just throw some seats on the back where the trailer hitches on and you're good to go.

Man, where were you guys when I had an SUV thread out there. The only guys that replied were SUV lovers.

<Is there really that much of a market for a $50,000+ SUV? I'm thinking that there probably isn't. When you figure in sales tax, luxury tax, and gas guzzler tax, that thing will $60,000+>

Believe it or not a Range Rover can go for over $80Gs. It's ridiculous seeing some rich person driving this immaculate vehicle around knowing they will never drive it off road.

Speaking of SUV's. I saw something I thought I wouldn't ever see. 4 Ford Expiditions cake with mud from some off roading. I was impressed to say the least.

Adul, they probabaly went to a special shop that custom cakes your car in mud to make it look like you were doing some off-roading.

ADUL:

Or there were coming from a comercial shoot where they were trying to make it look like they are actually driven off road.

You guys seen the cadillac SUV? Pardon my ignorance but it seems that this thing's off-roading is no better than a lowered exotic sports car. Its as low and heavy as hell. I'm sure that that 30 ton beast would blow the shocks on anything but the smallest of imperfections in the road.

The current Cadillac SUV is just a Tahoe with a lot of added plastic. It makes it look lowered and robs the vehicle of any true off road ability. These type of SUV's are a joke to me. People who think that these Cadillac type SUV's are really better are the type who argue that Dell is better than Compaq, but they don't know anything about computer components themselves. They just have preconceived notions about brand names.

You guys are just jealous when it comes to SUV's. How many threads do we need on this subject? It's a free country and people can buy what they want.

I say it's about time people realized that minivans and SUV's have added utility and usefullness that is very important. Cars are pretty worthless, admit it. They can't haul or tow much typically, (unless you get a old rear drive car), and they have little resale value.
How many times have you wanted to buy something, but had to wonder if it would fit in your car? How many times would having 3 rows of seats been a huge help to you?

True PG, but then in other cases, say driving a family around, a car is better than a minivan because of its increased stability and what not.

All vehicles do have a purpose - but like you said the cadi SUV doesn't have a purpose. Its got the off-roading potential of a minivan and the price of a cadillac!

But what is the extent of suvs and the derivative of. When will they stop getting bigger and bigger. And cars are good for a lot of things. My car gets 32-36 mpg, name one suv that gets close to that. They might be nice to haul the jeds around but for one or two people they just eat money.

Face it, a chevy cheyenne(sp) can haul more cargo, fit 5 people very well, pull a hell of a lot more, and has a lot more power, but people are not buying them left and right. If i had the money to buy a 80k suv, i would buy a hummer over any of these suvs. Simple fact is like russ and the others said, it can run over the little yugo no problem.

Yes I am very jealous of the mileage, handling, acceleration and towing capacity of SUVs. They are really important to me.

As a guy who has driven a largish vehicle for an extended period of time (extended cab, 4x4 long bed pickup, a few weeks). If you're not actually useing them (ie. commuting), all they are is a pain to park. On the otherhand, if you DO actually use them (ie. hauling a cord of wood) they are the best vehicles in the world.

My thoughts exactly Demon.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who don't use it for purposes which they are designed to do. Like this thread is saying, look at the absurd evolution of the SUV. Range Rovers and Toyota Land Cruisers were once respectable true off-road vehicles (I heard LCs were the preferred vehicle of guerillas in Sudan). Now look how pathetic those vehicles are. The only thing they are really used for now is take your golf clubs to your country club. I hope these car companies eventually come to their senses and stop this ridiculous crap.

Doggie: Do you know how long the Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee has been criticized for it's lack of storage? At least a decade. I hope the engineers have no intention of making it larger just for the storage space

God save the real SUV.

<<nobody needs something that big>>

Ahem.... just like nobody needs a PIII 933 either, you could do the same things with a 400Mhz. Lets face it, there's a LOT of things we don't really need but we want, be it for luxury, convenience, or just to show off. Whatever. Who are you to judge whether that soccer mom should buy one or not?? If she wants to drive a huge monster that guzzles gas, and wants to spend $65,000 for that, then by all means, get it.
