Those engineers at Jeep better get some lessons from their Chrysler buddies because in a body that big they should figure out a way to get more space.

BTW: My roommate had a Cherokee in college and his parents had a Grand Cherokee and we never complained about space. I don't know what these people are complaining about. The old Nissan Pathfinder though, that was tiny inside.

<< Ahem.... just like nobody needs a PIII 933 either, you could do the same things with a 400Mhz. >>

But a PIII 933 doesn't hurt other computer users.

SUVs do!!! :| :|

Umm, tagej, I don't think you can compare cars with CPUs. I don't have to recite to you that old analogy of cars to PCs and how cars would get 1 million miles per gallon and go at light speed if we had the same amount of progress.

We don't need 1Ghz PCs for Word and web browsing but if you are a gamer, graphic designer or programmer you do need more powerful PCs. Sure it may be a luxury, but it isn't the same comparison with cars.

You can drive any car you want. I just don't like it when I see a soccer mom in one of these behemoths starts tailgating me at 65mph with a damn cellphone stuck on her diamond earringed ear.

I just think this SUV thing is getting ridiculous, just like the 200+ MPH sports car thing is ridiculous.

A fast CPU costs you nothing (but it's price of course). Not only does it not hurt others, but it doesn't increase your power bill (as an SUV costs gas). Plus you don't look like a moron with it unless you use your 1.5 gig to do emails only.

Let's see $78000:
A Chevy crew cab, with leather and cadillac stickers, or a Mercedes S500/
Unfortunately for Caddilac, any person stupid enough to pick the EXT is not smart enough to afford it

I've said this another post, but I'll rephrase it here again.

I shopped for my latest car for almost 3 months. I had many criteria that it had to fullfill these were the big ones, not necessarily in any order:

1) Hauling/carrying capacity
2) Saftey
3) Driving comfort
4) Options
5) Economy
6) Price
7) Competence in winter

Now, in my search, I looked at the following vehicles - Subaru Outback wagon, VW Passat Wagon w/ 4 motion, Audi A4, VW Golf, and then I saw GMC's promotions on the Jimmy's.

Now, the Subaru got thrown out the door as soon as tried getting into it. I couldn't fit into the drivers seat. Even with the steering wheel tilted all the way up, I still couldn't get my knees under the wheel. Scratch that one.

Next was the A4. Try fitting a 17" monitor still in the box in this thing...let alone two of them. Scratch the A4 on hauling ability.

Onto the Passat w/ 4 motion. Well for starters the seats just didn't hit me right. It wasn't that comfortable. Second - milage. The 4motion passat gets about 24MPG on the highway, my Jimmy gets 21. Sounds like the Passat wins right? Wrong. The Passat takes Premium octane while I can put the cheapest thing in the pump in my SUV. For the same amount of money that it costs to fill up a tank, I can get an extra 25 miles out of a tank over the Passat. Who's the real gas guzzler? Not to mention the Passat costs 5k-7k more than my Jimmy, plus the extra $600 a year in insurance.

I also looked at the VW Golf, and damn near bought one if I hadn't seen a commerical pushing the GMC and Chevy SUV's. We looked at Blazers and Jimmys and ended up buying the Jimmy over the Golf for the following reasons - $300 cheaper insurance a year, superior hauling abilities, more spacious back seat, 4WD, and ground clearance. I know that the Golf could probably have gotten me to work and back the last couple of days when the snow storm moved through, but no where as effortlessly as what my SUV did. Also, once you figure in the extra 3% interest, and the higher insurance rate in the golf, the monthly payment difference was negligible between the two.

My girlfriend and I could have looked at minivans, but none of them would have fit into the cramped garage that we have. The Jimmy fits in the garage like a glove.

After the last weeks nasty ass weather, and having to haul around two complete computers, one with a 19" monitor, and one with a 17" monitor, I can say that I definitely appreciate all of what the SUV has offered. With the terrible plowing that has been done around here, the ground clearance the SUV offers has been a blessing. While cars are getting hung up in the 12" of snow in the corners, I blow through it with ease.

I'd say we made a good purchase.

You guys complaining about the costs of a dinky ass crew cab? You've never heard of the $150,000, aka I'msorichIhavetohavetheugliestmostbadassmofosuvaround, Mercedes G-Class.

Mercedes G-Class in all it's...er...glory

Let's not even talk about the Lamborghini LM500(did I get this right, car buffs?)

Paul

Edit for vi_edit,

Ya know...there are other iterations of the VW Passat wagon. Did you absolutely need 4WD? Where do you live? As for the Passat seats...I think you're the only person I've heard complain about them. Weirdo. JUUUUST Kidding Hope you enjoy your Jimmy, because it's nice for an SUV I'd like to have an SUV just to take up skiing, but my friend's sterling 825i, as well as a ford escort wagon lx, did this just fine and both are FWD.

So I guess there's really no need for SUVs here in Colorado. In fact on my way to pick up pizza 3 weeks ago, we got nailed by a freak snowstorm. On the way there we had to tackle this monstrous hill covered with ice. It's a major street 4 lanes in width with heavy traffic at all time, and the only cars going backwards as well as sideways, was a Suburban, 4 runner, and one Honda Accord(dumbass kept peeling out, getting snow all over his friend who was pushing). Meanwhile, it was a funny site to see this little Toyota Tercel just fly up the hill zooming past the Suburban and 4 Runner. Haha...you should've seen the looks on the guys who were pushing their SUVs up that hill. I wish I had my camera.

How about reliability?

That would be on my list, not that VWs and Audis are considered reliable (they aren't).

No offense, but are you trying captain morgans or smirnoff today? VW's and Audis are some of the most reliable cars out there!

As I pass all those tricked out rice-burners in my stock Ranger Supercab, I wonder; why the hell do they make these things trick if they don't even push them through the canyon curves? Then I say to myself; "what difference does it make to me?"
I have my GSXR-750, too, for those times when I feel the need to exceed 150.

point?

If you don't want an SUV, fine, but why are you bothered by those who do?
And what does it matter if they ever take them off-road?
I never went off-road today, but my truck has been in 4WD the whole day.

skoorb,

have you tried messing with the electrical systems in earlier VWs? Yikes...it's almost as bad as british cars. Now THOSE are unreliable. Imagine crusing down the highway, 85mph at night and the headlights going out. You freak out, but then the driver says, "OH...that's normal, they'll turn back on in a sec. This always happen."

Damn Sterling 825i...it sure was fun

Uhhhhh????? ok. Why is it that every Audi owner that I have talked to, which happens to be around 15 or so, has gotten at least 200K miles out of thier car?

Please step away from the crack pipe.

tagej - the only difference is that by getting a faster computer you're not hurting anyone. buying a huge-a$$ suv is dangerous to other drivers.

supergroove The biggest job I ever set out to do was install an amplifier and speakers...I just managed it I know a friend's dad bought a new Saab a few years back and it was ALWAYS going into the shop about the electrical system - now that was surely crap.

I don't quite understand the intent of this question.

SUV owners are so defensive about their trucks.
The point is that I can say that SUV's suck if I want to. It's not a political thing, more of a preference. If you wanna drive a tank, please help yourself to one. I think SUV's should be subject to some federal requirements that protect people in cars who are hit by these trucks, like lower bumpers. As long as it's not endangering my safety on the road, people can drive whatever the hell they please.

SuperGroove, yeah, I know that there are plain old FWD versions of the Passat Wagon. But, I have to do a lot of driving for work on some pretty nasty north/south roads between Iowa and Wisconsin. In winter time those roads can get downright messy.

We all know that FWD is superior to RWD, but 4x4 or AWD is superior to either of them. The AWD would have been very useful once the snow hit the ground. I would rather have the AWD and not have to use it, than need it, and not have it. That is why I wanted the 4motion.

As to the seats in the Passat, they had this goofy hump about halfway up the the middle of the seats, that instead of hitting me in the small of my back, it hit me about midback. I just couldn't get comfortable in it. And yes, the dealer called me a freak too She said that almost everyone she heard of thought the seats were great as well But, I'm just wierd. I can't fit into a lot of cars. Mazdas, hondas, Subarus, and toyotas are out of the question. I can't fit in them :Q

If this comment was directed at me, I feel that I had pretty clear justification as to why I purchased the vehicle that I did. I feel that it was much more mature than the SUV haters simply saying "SUV's SUXOR! AnD tHe PeepS who dRivE thEm R gAY!!"

if they don't even push them through the canyon curves
my car handles canyon curves just fine. not only that, but i can take 90 degree turns faster than an suv anyway. the only thing i can't do is rock-pound.

And what does it matter if they ever take them off-road?
I never went off-road today, but my truck has been in 4WD the whole day.

kind of like buying a p4-1500 for the sole purpose of checking email...
