I've said this another post, but I'll rephrase it here again.
I shopped for my latest car for almost 3 months. I had many criteria that it had to fullfill these were the big ones, not necessarily in any order:
1) Hauling/carrying capacity
2) Saftey
3) Driving comfort
4) Options
5) Economy
6) Price
7) Competence in winter
Now, in my search, I looked at the following vehicles - Subaru Outback wagon, VW Passat Wagon w/ 4 motion, Audi A4, VW Golf, and then I saw GMC's promotions on the Jimmy's.
Now, the Subaru got thrown out the door as soon as tried getting into it. I couldn't fit into the drivers seat. Even with the steering wheel tilted all the way up, I still couldn't get my knees under the wheel. Scratch that one.
Next was the A4. Try fitting a 17" monitor still in the box in this thing...let alone two of them. Scratch the A4 on hauling ability.
Onto the Passat w/ 4 motion. Well for starters the seats just didn't hit me right. It wasn't that comfortable. Second - milage. The 4motion passat gets about 24MPG on the highway, my Jimmy gets 21. Sounds like the Passat wins right? Wrong. The Passat takes Premium octane while I can put the cheapest thing in the pump in my SUV. For the same amount of money that it costs to fill up a tank, I can get an extra 25 miles out of a tank over the Passat. Who's the real gas guzzler? Not to mention the Passat costs 5k-7k more than my Jimmy, plus the extra $600 a year in insurance.
I also looked at the VW Golf, and damn near bought one if I hadn't seen a commerical pushing the GMC and Chevy SUV's. We looked at Blazers and Jimmys and ended up buying the Jimmy over the Golf for the following reasons - $300 cheaper insurance a year, superior hauling abilities, more spacious back seat, 4WD, and ground clearance. I know that the Golf could probably have gotten me to work and back the last couple of days when the snow storm moved through, but no where as effortlessly as what my SUV did. Also, once you figure in the extra 3% interest, and the higher insurance rate in the golf, the monthly payment difference was negligible between the two.
My girlfriend and I could have looked at minivans, but none of them would have fit into the cramped garage that we have. The Jimmy fits in the garage like a glove.
After the last weeks nasty ass weather, and having to haul around two complete computers, one with a 19" monitor, and one with a 17" monitor, I can say that I definitely appreciate all of what the SUV has offered. With the terrible plowing that has been done around here, the ground clearance the SUV offers has been a blessing. While cars are getting hung up in the 12" of snow in the corners, I blow through it with ease.
I'd say we made a good purchase.
