I have found in order to get a decent cup of joe out of a keurig, use a dark roast coffee and make the smallest cup size. I do not own one but this is what I have found at many homes. I personally use a French press on the weekends and a BUNN BT Velocity during the week. I buy Madcap cofffe's Oktoberfest.

Keurigs are nice for when you just want 1 cup and there's also lot of flavours available. On the other hand they are probably super terrible for the environment considering all the little plastic cups that end up in the landfill and take 1000's of years to degrade. We have one at work and I use it all the time, and I can't help but think of how terrible it is for the environment.

The best coffee comes from a properly calibrated chemistry rig made from spare parts left over from setting up a meth lab.

Don't clean it. People make a bigger deal out of coffee apparatus cleanliness than needs to be made. As long as you aren't making stupid stuff with artificial flavor, a rinse under hot water is sufficient, and maybe thoroughly clean quarterly or so.

It's not the cleaning that makes k-cups great for work. It's the fact they are single serving. Who wants a big carafe of coffee that has sat on the burner for lord knows how long. You can also easily choose the blend or flavor for your cup and not have everyone else complain.

Keurig machines make terrible coffee when they are used frequently but are infrequently cleaned. Even the worst drip coffee makers are better. Coffee leaves oil and residue from grounds on any type of brewing equipment that ruins it if you don't clean them properly. The more convenient you make the system, though, the less people seem to be aware of that. With a French press it's pretty obvious and extremely easy to clean.

We have the commercial Bunn coffee makers at work and I think that's a better option than Keurig, which I've had before at two other jobs. For small offices and companies I can see why they prefer using Keurig machines, though.

I agree. By the office I meant: in my office.

And you're totally right about the lack of cleaning being directly related to the ease of use.

Ever work for a fast-food place and look inside one of those soda dispensers?

If your coffee pot sits on the burner long enough to ruin the flavor...you're not doing it right.

just like honey scrips are simulated apple, not apple. The entire world has moved to artificials and simulations, get on the train

It is the 'truth' that conceals that the original no longer exists, or never did.

Buy your beans green, from a supplier who knows their shit.

Roast beans yourself, fresh, and not for too long.

Consume within 1 week of roasting.

Grind beans yourself, properly, and seconds before brewing.

Brew using a method that doesn't suck, e.g., Aeropress, Bialetti Moka, real espresso machine, or siphon.

Brew using filtered water, and at a temperature below boiling where possible.

ANY deviation from the above steps leads to a direct and noticeable degradation of the coffee's flavor.

Follow those steps correctly, however, and you'll have the cheapest, best tasting cup of real coffee money can buy. And you'll quite probably start skipping the milk and sugar.

Why yes, I am a snob and a judgmental scumbag. I'm also right. You are wrong. Have a nice day.

K-Cup Inventor John Sylvan Admits He Doesn't Use 'Expensive' Coffee Pods

“I feel bad sometimes that I ever did it," Sylvan told The Atlantic.

“I don't have one. They're kind of expensive to use,” Sylvan said about the coffee pods experience. “Plus it’s not like drip coffee is tough to make.”

Just to be clear, he feels bad because of the extra garbage it produces, not because people are getting bad coffee.

To be more clear, this guy was pushed out of Keurig before they hit market success and got paid $50,000 for a stake that would be valued in billions today.

I think he might be a little bitter.

Following the advice of a co worker, we ditched the Keurig last weekend and bought an Aeropress on Amazon.com. Yes, its cool, no, I can't taste the difference (I'm probably using shit coffee grounds), no, its not much of a hassle to heat water to 175-190 degrees and make the coffee. What commercially available coffee beans (sold at dillons or hyvee) would one recommend?

K cups suck because they do not have enough coffee beans for a cup. Coffee is much better when brewed in a real pot.

I know people are lazy, but come on, its not that hard to grind beans, pour water and change filter, is it?

Depends on the coffee company: each box tells you how much coffee is in a pod: that said a self-fill system at home allows for a very strong cuppa

Yea, I know, I am not their target demographic anyhow, They target people who like to drink a little sip of coffee once in a while, Id rather have half a gallon of strong black coffee daily, or more.
