Okay, so I'm about to graduate with my mechanical engineering degree, and I've been very stressed out lately due to the shitty job market. Even my internship, that specializes in designing green buildings, isn't hiring any full time engineers. Anyway, I haven't had much time for news lately but a friend of mine just informed me of these two bills (house and senate version of the same thing) that legalize and tax recreational marijuana, so hopefully this isn't a repost.
Personally, I'm surprised to see these bills so soon after the decriminalization measure that passed a few months ago. However, with more and more news of the state's budget deficit, and California having a similar bill in the works, I guess it makes sense.
I kinda skimmed through the bill itself, but the thing that blew my mind was the taxes they want to implement, based on thc content. I'll break it down for those too lazy to click the links:
Class C - less than 5% THC/Dry Weight - $150 tax/ounce
Class B - between 5% and 10% THC/Dry Weight - $200 tax/ounce
Class A - 10% THC/Dry Weight or more - $250 tax/ounce
Taxes seem a bit crazy to me... I thought $50/oz was reasonable which is what I think CA was doing, but I don't know enough about either bill outside the money figures to give an objective opinion.
The one thing I am thinking though, is there will be lots of HVAC work to be done if people start building growhouses!
Senate Bill - bit easier to read and not truncated
House version
EDIT - upon further reading, I found that there are provisions for tax free home growing, and tax free "gifting" to other adult users. Another cool provision was that felons cannot obtain licenses to grow/sell, but if their felony was cannabis related they're granted amnesty.
