Maybe the phone is meant to be that way? Make it the shape you want. lol.

I'm not an Apple fan or apologist, but that doesn't look like "barely" exerting force. I could destroy a lot of phones like that by avoiding the battery, not really sure what the point of these deliberate bend tests are, other than to get views and attention for the video makers.

Lots of phones were tested in other vids, you can't do that shit to the HTC One, Note 3, or Moto X

You might be right about that, just saw a few videos. Still, I hope by this point people who would be concerned about durability are already avoiding buying the 6 Plus.

I feel pretty confident I could snap my Galaxy Note 3 in half bare handed if I tried. Doesn't mean I'm worried it'll break in my pocket. This is totally overblown. But entertaining.

I only wish people would cancel their damn pre-orders so I could get my iPhone 6 Plus quicker. Don't think I'll be that lucky.

If I pressed to the point my finger tips turned bright ass red and the knuckles turned super white I could break any phone. That guy said he was barely exerting force, but any harder and he would have been full on grunting.

These bend videos have shown me if I buy a iP6+ I shouldn't deliberately try to bend it in half using as much force as I can generate with my fingers. If I had money I would make a similar video with my HTC One, and 100% I could cause it to break.

It is clear the iPhone 6 is weak and designed with a huge flaw.
I just find it hilarious some people will forever be in denial. Overblown? Almost a grand for a phone that bends easily? No thank you.

Apple needs to increase rigidity of iPhone 6 and stop cost cutting where it matters.

I don't know why you're quoting me with your childish insult when it seems to me it's you who can't take a passing joke.

You mad bro?

I only quoted you accidentally. I clicked the quote instead of the reply.

I wonder if it bends more easily if it's heated up (perhaps you leave a resource hog open, lock the phone and put it in your skinny jeans pocket and set something down heavy on your lap). Then it might accidentally deform or maybe something else might.

Not to worry, I'm working on my handy-dandy iNo-bend kit for the low low price of $29.99.

The consumer reports link puts on the show that it is scientifically measuring how much force it would take to actually bend in a 3 point test, but I agree it's not emulating the real life scenario of putting some pressure on a key section of the back of the phone. Aluminum is so inelastic that it would just be a cumulative problem. I have an HTC One M8, so this Iphone 6+ bendgate got me thinking about it but I realized that the structure of my phone is setup better because the back is rounded with respect to the narrow dimension which I'd like to think adds a lot of strength to it. The new Iphones are flat on the back though...that's not good, especially in the region close to the volume cut outs.

All the bend tests that use hands are a 4 point bend test. Civil engineers say the 4 point bend test is better than consumer report's 3 point bend test because it reveals weaknesses better.

Exactly. It's like Apple showing off how they tested the antenna on the 4. Sure they tested it quite a bit, the problem was they didn't do all the right testing. Of course it won't fail tests that you don't even run on it, which is the problem here.

BS. It might be overblown but acting like it's not been completely proven that the new iPhones (at least the 6+) are more prone to bending is just being delusional.

If I pressed to the point my finger tips turned bright ass red and the knuckles turned super white I could break any phone. That guy said he was barely exerting force, but any harder and he would have been full on grunting.

Sure you could. Weird because others have tried and haven't been able to.

Ill bet the plastic has a steel frame inside or something.

It doesn't. Go look at pics/videos of them disassembled. The Note 3 definitely doesn't, the inside is mostly plastic (there's a big plastic frame inside but it's not even all that robust and yet it's still significantly stronger than the iPhones) and there's not even a long PCBoard either.

I was wrong, the Note 3 apparently does have a Magnesium subframe in there somewhere. But the key point is it has in an internal frame for strength and external components wrapped around it.

The problem is Apple is relying on the aluminum housing to serve as both the frame and the external housing. Other phones are not doing that, they have both a frame for strength and then other parts as the housing. Apple didn't do anything to make the housing function as a frame (like you'd do for a unibody construction where you'd strengthen key points) and didn't use strong enough aluminum to compensate.

Compare it to say the unibody iPods and other Apple products and the reason those worked is because the aluminum wrapped around and was a part of the overall shell, while these new iPhones are just the backside with curves around the edges with a huge gaping hole in the front for the display. They needed to either make it of thicker aluminum, or brace it some other way. They didn't do that, and it shows.

Now, this might be enough for smaller devices (like the iPod Touch and maybe for the iPhone 6), and it might be enough for even large ones for the most part (iPads), but it's very clear that the 6+ isn't as robust and therefore it's more of a problem for it.

That Reddit post explains it much better.

Whats wrong with the display? Its the first mobile phone with an sRGB display (or at least I cannot think of another) and has great view angles. The design feels great in hand and is very nice to hold (Speaking of the 6 which I own, cannot comment on the 6+).

Plenty of phones bend: http://www.cultofmac.com/297404/get-bent-shocking-history-bent-smartphones/

It's lower resolution than the competition and if I'm not mistaken has not performed terribly well in testing (not poorly, just not as well as I think even previous iPhones did, at least one of the color tests it was off by quite a bit). I'm not saying it's garbage, but I personally think 1080p in the base 6 and 1440p in the 6+. These are premium devices, I expect them to have premium components. Apple did not push in any way with these new iPhones, and so they just come off as iterative. I'm also disappointed in Android phones. I feel like they too have become too iterative.

I love how what half of those are Apple devices. "But guuuuys, they always bent, don't know why people act like its only a problem now!" I'm guessing most of those won't bend as easily as the 6 just from using your hands either.

if having record breaking sales by selling 10 million devices in 3 days is "disappointment" ... sign me up! i'd gladly be embarassed any day for those kind of sales on an item.

That's kinda the whole argument about Apple isn't it? They don't even have to have a great device and it'll sell like it's the best one ever made. Just because it's popular doesn't mean it's perfect. Literally all it means is it's popular.

Of course we already know you have some major problem withe people having opinions, so I'm not at all surprised by your attitude in this thread, but hey, I'll actually try to discuss this with you and maybe you'll see it's not people just hating it because it's popular.

Just because it's better doesn't mean one can't be disappointed it wasn't a bigger improvement. I'm not even talking outlandish stuff here. Higher resolutions, 2GB RAM, something to make a noticeable improvement to the camera (higher res sensor, or I would prefer, keep the 8MP but go larger pixel sizes). I think most people expected more than what the 6 is. They still bought it (a lot of people bought it because they're due for an upgrade and it's the newest iPhone which means it's a fair amount better than the 5 they've been using for the past 2 years).

Still doesn't change the fact that it's not anything special. Apple used to actually innovate some. I know a lot of people trashed the fingerprint sensor but personally that's one of the main things I like about the iPhone. Android companies could catch up though so that'd remove that (Samsung probably would have if their sensor wasn't on a thinner bar button compared to the nice sized round one Apple has). The camera was the other main thing I liked about the iPhones, I felt Apple did a better job than anyone (including Nokia, although Nokia absolutely has the capability to outperform the iPhones with some of their devices) of making it take consistent decent quality pics. I think Android companies have managed to make this much less of an issue, and some of them are actually innovating in ways Apple hasn't (HTC, which is why I look at what they did and wish Apple would have upsized their 8MP sensor). Most of Apple's innovation this time are things that Android has been doing for a year or more. If that's not disappointing then I don't know what is.

I don't even hate Apple, I actually wanted the 6 to be really good as I'd actually want to have a reason to try to get one over my current phone. But with how little it actually changed, and with it having a potentially significant defect, I'll definitely be passing. Maybe the 6S will be worth it, but there's as much chance that Android manufacturers will step their game up just as much. And who knows maybe even Nokia will decide to become a true contender again.

All of the mobile OSes and the companies making the hardware for them are flawed. I feel we should have better phones all around but we keep getting these gimped devices as they try to slow down innovation so they can keep having a new device out with enough "checkboxes" over last year's version. I'm disappointed in all of them (not just Apple), even though I feel that all of them have consistently improved the quality of the phones, it feels like they could and should be better still. Phone prices are not really going down even though component costs and things of that nature are.

Testing is not a substitute for modeling and analysis, testing only verifies the model or analysis used. Apple either used incorrect stress analysis or even worse, had no analysis at all.

As already pointed out, you can see why this slipped past Apple, all their test rigs assume uniform rigidity, which is obviously not the case. This is the same for Consumer Report's test.

Like with the iCloud leaks, both figuratively and literally, the emperor is not wearing any clothes.
