Glad I wasn't the only one that thought Key Lime Pie was a stupid name. Kitkat is way better.

A bit disappointed this is 4.4 and not 5.0 though. I guess my Gnex is sticking it out for another year.

I'm just excited to see what the new $299 Nexus will be like.

Android 4.4 was going to kick ass no matter what, regardless of what they named it.

Eh, whatever. I just figured Google had more class.

I know exactly what you mean. It's hard to explain but I guess commercializing one of your most consumer facing products like this, especially when you're rich as hell is just plain weird.

How is using Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jellybean, and Kitkat any different from Lion, Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Mountain Lion?

How much "class" is there in these code names?

First off, how can anyone be comparing things like Cupcake, Eclair, Ice Cream Sandwich, Lion, Leopard, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Chicago, Whistler or Longhorn to KitKat is just beyond me. You're comparing generic names of things to a trademarked candy bar.

Still, I wouldn't have even minded if they did call it KitKat.

Where I draw the line, I think, is in the cross-promotion going on. In this case, so far, it's simply Google saying 'run out and buy KitKat bars and then put your code in to see if you're a winner!'

Look, obviously I'm in the minority here, so fine. But anyone who thinks that KitKat isn't going to be somehow prominently represented in the OS somehow is setting them self up for disappointment, IMO.

I can completely understand what you're getting at here, but there was no money exchanged which shouldn't entitle KitKat any kind of marketing in the core of the OS. I'm leaning more towards there won't be anything related other than a wallpaper or two baked in or maybe flying KitKat Android guys.

If money was exchanged, it would be a completely different story IMO.

Heh. I think the lack of money being exchanged is precisely the reason to complain about it. At least if Google had simply licensed the name and paid for it, I wouldn't be too worried about what Hershey/Nestle wants back.

But since there was no money exchanged, I very much doubt Hershey/Nestle is going to let Google run around with it without some expectation of return.

But honestly, all I'm really expecting is for the default wallpaper to be KitKat themed. But that would, in my opinion, count as prominently featured. The only thing I would count as prominently featured is the about page in the settings after you tap the version number five times.

Oh I'm relaxed. Don't underestimate my level of relaxing. I'm just surprised not as many people have an issue with this and are so accepting of it. This is basically just another step towards the Idiocracy society, IMO. First there's Android, brought to you by Kit Kat. Then there's Android, brought to you by Life Savers!. Then Android, brought to you by M&M's. By then everyone should be on board and we could have Microsoft Windows 9, brought to you by the USPS!

Tinfoil hat much?
Android code is free for anyone to examine. When the Nexus comes out, feel free to examine the code and tell us what you see to prove your point.

Kitkat wallpaper, Kitkat screen savers, Kitkat lockscreens, Kitkat app, Kitkat ads, Kitkat spyware, Kitkat widgets, and many more will be featured in Android 4.4?

Why must people always automatically assume that there must be something nefarious?
Two companies can't just come together and collaborate on an idea that doesn't cost either of them anything and increases both their profits and brand name recognition?

Equivalents would be more along the lines of "Microsoft Windows: Skittles Edition" or "iOS: Reese's Peanut Butter Cups"

Yea, think how stupid that would be.

That would actually be fitting for Windows 8, only I would have said "Hello Kitty Edition" or "Rainbow Bright Edition"

I don't care what Google calls it's builds. But yeah, I thought this was a joke when I saw it on Twitter earlier today. Codes names are now getting corporate sponsorships? Are we kidding?

To the person earlier that seemed worried Google would prominently showcase KitKat within Android. At this moment I have zero reason to believe we'll be seeing a chocolate and wafer themed UI or something in the Nexus 5.

I still like that Google is using fun themed code names for Android and despite the surprise I think KitKat is a fun choice. And hopefully my plastic orange pumpkin pail won't be the only thing that has a KitKat in it by Halloween.

I wonder if L will be another candy brand name like Lemonheads or LaffyTaffy. Or will it go back to generic deserts/candies like lollipop?

Personally, I'm amused by the name choice. I'd wondered if they would try something unexpected, like releasing another 4.x release or choosing something other than Key Lime Pie, just as a wink to all of us who've been speculating about the next release. That's totally in line with Google's sense of humor.

Really, people, every release has been named after a dessert. This is nothing more than an opportunity to have a bit of a laugh, not some evil conspiracy to fatten up hordes of geeks.

That said, I am tempted to go buy some KitKat's. Maybe I'll justify buying a bag by rationalizing that I could hand them out to trick-or-treaters. If they do keep this up, the M release should be Mr. Goodbar. A damn fine candy bar that gets far too little attention and respect.

no money exchanged? probably got some other benefits. this aint free promotion.

KitKat & Google is doing a contest for people to win a free Nexus 7 thus more people will buy KitKat bars for a chance to win....
