From what I read, the name change seemed like a last minute concoction by some development guys at Google.why didn't they pay? This will be good for KitKat.

Just something fun they threw together. If you look at the new website and video, you can see both are enjoying laughing at themselves and others:

But it's a short term partnership at best. Maybe a year, probably less. There's no need for a lot of money to exchange hands.
LOL....some of you guys need to take a step back and chill. Go smoke some weed or take a Valium. To get all uptight about what they call an Android version is sad. Lighten up on the caffeine....lol
Replying to a user on its German KitKat Facebook wall, the translated message reads: "Hi Tim, Android 4.4 KIT KAT is available in October".There have been rumours circulating that Google is planning an event on October 14, at which the search giant is expected to announce details on the next iteration of its mobile platform.
The publicity of this release, and the recognizability of the name could do wonders to emphasize Android, rather than leaving consumers to focus on Samsung or Galaxy. This might somewhat strengthen the desire for manufacturers like Samsung to emphasize that their phones are Android phones, and KitKat phones, rather than inching towards their own OS, Tizen. Or, at least, it would have more people looking for Android, and noticing that Samsung isn't (at some future date) running Android anymore.
Just a bit of speculation.
Android KitKat release date revealed by Nestle - TechRadar
yeah cuz drugs have worked so well as a solution to problems thus far.
Does anyone know why Google scrapped "Key Lime Pie," "5.0" and backed down to 4.4 Kitkat? Curious whether this is simply name/number change (for whatever reasons) or whether there is a more fundamental reason for it. (e.g. some big feature Google planned for 5.0 not making the cut/deadline)
Some leaked screenshots, allegedly running 4.4 on a N5.

Not gonna lie. They're ugly. Hope these are meant for developers and bug-testing, not representing finished products.
I don't know if "5.0" was ever real. Seems like we've been guessing Android versioning numbers incorrectly for a while now.
I think Google wants to use smaller number increments so that people stuck on older versions don't feel so bad. Having an Android 4.2 while while 4.4 gets released doesn't look as bad as having an Android 4.2 phone with Android 5.0 gets released. I imagine it's the manufactures that want this.
I think Key Lime Pie was a real code name. But then the marketing department got involved and voila, Kit Kat with a tie in with the candy company.

Agreed, 5.0 is probably saved for a major revision down the road.Previous major revisions of android signified platform changes.
2.0 was for cellphones.
3.0 was for tablets.
4.0 was the merging of the two versions, for an android that worked well with either type of device.
Maybe google is saving 5.0 for a desktop/tv box/laptop version of android.
Lots of pics @CNET. 4.4 running on the N4.
