Android and personal privacy???

When you install an Android app, it want complete access to everything on your device including your contacts and personal info. Is there any way around this other than keeping personal info off the Android device?

Don't install the app. If an app is requesting info that it doesn't need, it's probably not an app that you need.

When you go try to install an app, it'll first tell you at access it needs, you look at it then choose to install.

Each app has different requirements, and if an update changes its access requirements you have to agree to the changes before it updates. Don't install an app if you think it's asking for more than it's using.

Any app that has a feature for importing contacts (like facebook and linkedin) will ask for access to your contacts.

can block apps from accessing private data (not 100% fool proof though)

This, or use xPosed + AppOpsExposed. This gives you access to the core Android app permissions manager that was briefly available but then locked back down.

It's that reason and SDcard access that makes me stay on 4.3.

Well and the fact that Samsung have said they aren't releasing 4.4 for the i9300.
