android phone for a parent

Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying an android phone for my dad who would use it strictly as a phone/organizer. The reason I don't want to get him a dumb phone is that having side-loaded apps (i.e. russian/english dictionary) would be great. He does not use or want a text or data plan.

Is there any phone that I can buy and root for use on T-Mobile? Perhaps an older jailbroken iPhone?

the only way to skip on a data plan would be to buy your own phone full price. you can get tmobile vibrants on craigslist for under $400. you wouldn't need to root it for use on t-mobile.

alternatively you can buy any of the phones they offer for full price. check the lg optimus t, it's new and has gotten good reviews, but i'm not sure how much it is off contract. (if you get a contract, they'll force you to get a data plan)

I have bought and sold plenty of phones on CL and never had a problem.
