Angelina Jolie has revealed she recently underwent a double mastectomy after genetic tests determined the actress faced a high probability of developing breast cancer.

The Girl, Interrupted Oscar-winner announced the news in a New York Times column published Tuesday titled “My Medical Choice,” saying that she wanted to avoid the same fate as her mother, who died at age 56 after battling the disease for a decade.

Wow that seems extreme for a preventative measure based on genetic testing. I assume she's getting new ones?

Wow that is sad. I can't think of other situations where something so drastic happens purely out of preventative reasons. Basically an amputation based on doctors' best guesses, with no current issue. That must be a very hard choice to make and one that most people will continue to question for the rest of their life.

Her mother died from ovarian cancer though... are they somehow connected?

I thought this was a late April fools.

I'm confused so maybe someone can answer/explain this. If she knows she has a high possibility of getting breast cancer, why not just get check up much more regularly (not like she can't afford it) and if/when they find cancer at least then do the mastectomy or is it too late once you get it? If it isn't I think I'd rather play the wait and see game while having more check ups.

The cancers are more aggressive, so it's better to prevent than to wait until it develops.

Yes the BRCA Mutation causes:

Hereditary breast–ovarian cancer syndrome, people with her Mutation have a 5 times increase risk of breast cancer and a 10 to 30 times greater risk of ovarian cancer.

I wouldn't be surprised if she also had her ovaries and fallopian tube removed as well. With this mutation she at very high risk for not only breast cancer, but ovarian and fallopian cancer as well.

My mother has the BRCA mutation. She found out after my grandmother died of breast cancer.

She had both breasts removed and a hysterectomy.

It is becoming more and more common as a preventative measure.

Yeah, I believe Wanda Sykes did this as well for perhaps the same reason.

As far as cancers go, breast cancer generally has a high likelihood to metastasize, particularly to the brain. Can't say I blame her.

My wife had a double mastectomy last year, at age 34. A lump was found cancerous but she didn't have the BRCA mutation. She got off relatively easy with just hormonal therapy (it's basically induced menopause). No chemo or radiation required. She opted for no implants because it would have required more surgery.

Cancer is still scary.
