Don't do it. If you do, make sure you google for the 40% off coupon and use paypal for an additional 20% off for a total of 48% off.

But seriously, I don't think it's worth it.

Also, once you find the contractor, cancel and you may be able to get a full refund if your account is < 1 months

not enough attention in this thread for Servicemagic (now homeadvisor) - F R E E. Only 2 mentions? Come on, I thought we were savvy people. Used servicemagic twice and both times had good results - even a call back within minutes of submitting. How is Angie's List even successfully getting membership payment with servicemagic out there? The only advantage Angie's List has is for businesses (better leads by more serious people), not an advantage to us consumers.

It's like paying for a Google competitor.

Angie's List derive 70%+ of its revenue from service providers who advertise with Angie's List. I would still recommend word of mouth and yelp

It's like paying for a Google competitor.

You have no clue who you are hiring. You have no idea of the quality of the work.

With angieslist, I can see real customer reviews........

Google, yelp, and others are full of fake or bogus reviews.

Yes, the companies can pay for ads to move up the list on angielist, but it doesn't change their reviews. If their reviews suck, I don't care if they are at the top of the search results.

Servicemagic has reviews/star ratings and requires profiles too. Are you saying they are full of fakes?

The only flaw I see about servicemagic (as mentioned) is as a contractor you'll get lots of freebie customers just testing the waters and they may never return your call and you end up having to pay for the lead.

Used them again yesterday to do some heavy maintenance work on my HVAC system. (Evaporator coil cleaning, A bunch of other stuff I want needed, etc..) anyhow the guys who came out were great and came on the 31st of all times and got things working nicely, my system feels, new again.

I got a 10 percent discount as well.

Anyhow so far I have done like 60K of work via contractors I picked from them on my primary home and some work on my other home.

Let me tell you you do get a different caliber of contractor, and they definitely are always wanting to make sure that I am happy so that they do get positive feed back.etc. They know the value of good word of mouth and repeat customers because of it.

Anyhow big fan of it so far.

Works well, as long as you live in a populated area. Rurally, probably not worth the money.

if you cant think outside the box then i would recommend it, but if you are good at analyzing what you read on google (or local groups) and are business/marketing savvy then it's generally a waste of money.

Angie's List will eventually become free because there just aren't enough people staying on as a long-term subscriber.

You do know it started free, right?

It'll never be free again.

I joined @ 6 months ago and canceled the same day.

It's nothing like it was when free and much of it is paid advertising.

If you're looking to hire a contractor for a project the less than $20 to be a member is small potatoes to getting screwed on that project. I've never been a member of it but am interested in it so I can see some of the more reputable people out there. I'll try the free services, but I'm not too big on wading through shills and bullshit to save a few bucks on a multi-hundred or thousand of dollars project.

Went to the site, saw you had to pay, closed the site, used google to find contractor.
Contractor work was fine with no issues.

Membership is $3.75 a month. I've saved thousands of dollars using Angie's List and the discounts that can be found on there with various companies and contractors. Money well spent.

I'll reiterate my disappointment. I'm in a major metropolitan area, and they often have no reviews for things in my area, and when I asked them to do one special bit of research they were very responsive in saying they'd do it, and then blew it, not doing it and when finally doing it, doing it wrong, as in things like guaranteeing they called a name to confirm they were available and good quality, and when I called they long ago stopped that business, so they hadn't even been called.

Instead, it seems like mostly a money-making company that mostly just sends me ads for services to buy over and over.

I know of several contractors that were registered with them and then ceased when AL wanted money to keep the bad reviews away. I do not trust them. I'd rather try to find someone I know to suggested a trusted contractor. YMMV
