As an ophthalmologist, I saw two patients within the last year or so with intense eye irritation due to tarantula hairs embedded in their corneas. No lie. The bristle-like hairs are released into the air by the spider rapidly rubbing their legs together---a defense mechanism aimed at potential predators. The hairs are like little porcupine quills and stick into almost anything. My advice: buy the toy and leave the real tarantulas alone.
