annoying floppy seek problem

I have come across this annoying problem I don't know how to solve. When one of my machines starts up, it tries to read the floppy drive. This occurs every time the machine starts up, just after it reaches the windows desktop. The result is the noise of it unsuccesfully trying to read the floppy, accompanied by the lag while it tries. This is under WIN95B. The really weird thing is I have seem the exact same thing happen on several other computers in the past, but I have never come up with a way to stop it. Has anyone else had this problem? You solutions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

you have any virus protection software set to auto scan on startup?

No, none of the software should be attempting to acces the floppy at startup.

Perhaps your BIOS has a switch for "Floppy Seek". Mine does, so I turned it off.

Clear the contents of "documents" on the start menu.

1. right click on the taskbar
2. click "properties"
3. click "start menu programs"
4. click the "clear" button in the documents menu box.
5. click o.k.
6. reboot and let us know if that fixed it

Clearing the documents didn't work, nor did disabling floppy seek

If you ever find out, let me know. I have had a similar problem for a year or more now. Sometimes when I open Windows Explorer, it checks the floppy drive. I've tried all kinds of things, and I'm pretty much stumped.

I read somewhere that this had to do with your bios/hardware, and it really couldn't be discarded. I think that the article also mentioned that it has something to do with documents that you had previously opened from the A: drive, and the OS still checks the original path of the file. Why, I don't know why, and where, I don't remember where I saw the article.

A couple of suggestions. First, however, back up your registry. Type "scanreg" at the 'Run...' box.

1) Try searching your registry for "A:\*" and deleting any entries in the right-hand pane.

2) Go to Control Panel | System icon | Performance tab | File System button | Floppy Disk tab | Settings section | Uncheck: "Search for new floppy ....",

I have the same problem, but I am running Win98.
The strange thing is that the arive gets searched on a regular
bases. In fact after I boot it takes 2 hours 1 min., and every 2hr.1min. after that. I have gone through all the steps in the post
above form the Annoyances web site to no avail. I have been working on this problem for 4 days now. Tomorrow I am going to get after it again. Sure could use some help.

A: drive(chugachugachugachugachugachuga)It must be 1:10, thats when it's to go off again.

At last I have found the answer. Microsoft find fast that was installed with office 97 was indexing my C: drive, and was set every two hours. Don't ask me why it was trying to access the A: drive. Looking at the log time when it last indexed it was the exact time that drive was accessed, and looking at the next scheduled time to index, it was right on. Will know for sure in 20min.
