Annoying people at the gym...

Just wondering what everyone's little pet peeves are of other people at the gym.

There's one thing I can't stad, people jabbering away on their cell phones.

And one thing that just bugs me, "tough guys" who try to lift as much as they can as fast as they can and scream while doing it.

- There's this one guy at my gym who will do a set and put a towel on the thing he's using, then come back like 7 minutes later cause he walks to the other side of the building to superset stuff.

- When people lift incorrectly, ie. they bench way more then they can really handle and move the bar like 8 inches away from their chest.

- When people try to act like tough guys.

That's pretty much all of mine.

A lack of modesty. Maybe its just at the base gym, but when you're in the locker room for a post workout shower, have the courtesy not to drop your pants and point your schlong in someone's face. Usually this seems to be older men.

QFT. I walked into the locker room to change once and came face to face with some old naked guy who was just walking around. Burned my eye sockets. Is is really that hard to wear gym shorts? Or at least a towel or something...

And... I dislike the groups of teens who crowd the machines while not doing much of anything.

This goes for anyone just screwing around. Like people standing at a station (squat rack, for example) socializing. When you go over and ask to use whatever it is, they look at you like you're the one with the problem. I'll never understand why I'M the rude one for pointing out YOUR lack of courtesy.

The screamers bother me the most. I understand that some grunting occurs naturally with effort, but the yelling is really unnecessary.

Mostly, it's just people who talk a lot...whether it be on a phone or to someone else in the gym. If you're in a group and taking turns, fine...but one on one, you're taking up space.

I seem to have gotten into a nice rhythm at my gym though...I go during the day before it gets crowded, I see the same people over and over again, everybody's just there to do their work. I even occasionally get asked to help with a spot...even though the one that usually needs it is pressing/squatting/etc more than twice my body weight. (I know, it's not that big of a deal...still kind of daunting though)

At my gym, there are usually several occasions when young guys will come in, very skinny or sometimes slightly overweight but doughy. They bounce from station to station, picking up the most ridiculously light weight, lift it about 15 times for one set AS FAST AS POSSIBLE, and them move on to the next.

I'm like didn't you come here to WORK? What do you think you are accomplishing?

at my local 24 hour fitness, the old ladies in spandex congregate outside the dance classroom in droves before each class. I wouldn't mind so much they were hot but . . damn. ..

..I've invested in my own home equipment. So far I have a magnetic resistance recumbent bike and a mag rower. got tired of the social stink at the gym.

There are a couple of Elipticals that I prefer to use that are in front of a TV and I hate it when the TV's are tuned ion to some soap or show like Martha Stewart instead of ESPN and I can't find an assistant to change the station. Not a really big annoyance but still an annoyance non the less.

Another is guys that use the shitter in the locker room and don't bother with a courtesy flush and stink up the whole place.

Yet another is when people don't towel off or wipe down the equipment after they use it.

And yet another is when sick people come in and cough and get their diseased germs all over the equipment.

They may not know how to lift properly. I'm hardly an expert, but I do know the basics.

- People crowding around machines, benches, etc. blabbing to each other or on cell phones

- Screamers (my new gym has rules against it and I've seen people kicked out for it...)

- People who don't lift correctly

- People who do one set of an exercise and then spend the next 10 minutes "posing" casually in the mirror.

- Really sweaty people who don't wipe down equipment after they use it.

I don't let much bother me. I respect that everyone is at different levels of fitness, and therefore have different approaches to working out. As long as there is common courtesy, I don't concern myself with what others are doing.

not being allowed to use the Smith Press to do high bar leg stretches.

this happened in about 2003 at a gym in San Diego. i had been in there
for months doing stretches in the weight room after swimming. i knew
most of the people, to the point where i would help them move the bench
into position if they wanted to use the Smith Press.

also had a lot of interesting conversations, & found out that i was sharing
the weight room with a retired debt-counselor/leg-breaker for East Coast
organized crime. who i would talk story with while i was doing the stretches.

anyway, the weight room supervisor decided i was using the equipment
in an un-approved manner. well, stretching is how i relax, and a bar
5' off the floor is very effective prop for some kinds of stretches. i
pointed out that the machine was built to take about 1000 pounds,
that i was going to hurt neither myself nor the machine, that i was the
only person in the weight room, and that i always let other people have
the machine if they wanted it. not good enough.

so i exploded and called him a fascist control freak and told him to
get the gym manager, who i knew. well, the gym manager did what
managers often do, back up their supervisors.

so i went to another gym and stretched there, and saw that they had
sort of like salsa dance classes, where i was the only guy. i ended
up taking those, trying to make the best of the situation.

The funny thing is, I never even notice these old men in the workout area.

The worst thing I've ever seen is a fat old guy using one of the club's hair dryer to dry his balls off.

It is either that or when the TV sets in the cardio area are tuned to Univision for some inexplicable reason...maybe the cleaning staff borrowed the remote

There is a point to that if they're doing it right. It's not that they're worried about hurting themselves. It's to get out every last ounce of strength in a set. The spotter will lift just a couple of pounds off the weight to help you complete the last 1 or 2 reps.

I'm annoyed by the girls who spread a towel or magazine across the digital readout of a cardio machine. It's pretty obvious that they're just trying to go way over the gym's time limit for a machine.

I wouldn't be annoyed by that if the gym actually had enough machines that they didn't have to impose time limits.

I see spotters who help on every rep. It's retarded.

Yeah, sometimes I'll make a bit of noise on the last rep or two of a set, but that is usually just do to exertion. The guys who let out those giant screams while not lifting all that much are absurd and obnoxious.
