So so true. In fact, I have a rule about locker rooms that the more of an old, fat, nasty shrivelled-up wreck of a human being some guy is, the more likely he is to treat the locker room like his personal nudist colony. I don't really care that much, but FFS be a little courteous, especially if you're nasty enough to cause nightmares.
BTW, my other rule about locker rooms (and single guys don't usually know this because us married types find out from our wives) is that the men get screwed. The women's locker rooms are usually plush and private and curtained-off, the men usually get spigots on a wall. It's true, I swear it. Even at expensive clubs.

Today I walk into the locker room only to see some fat old bastard butt ass naked drying off his ass crack with the hot air thingy that you dry your hands with.

Nothing says "I'M DEAD SEXY" like saggy man boobs and old man schlong flopping in the wind as he dances in front of a hand drier.

GAH!!!!!!

I used to only have time to work out after work, around 2 in the morning or later depending on how the shift turned out. The staffer on duty used to love turning all the lights off except whichever area I was in which didn't bother me so much except there was one really annoying couple who used to come in and turn them all on and blare the radio, big screen, hog machines, and basically have every bad gym habit imaginable. Every workout, and I mean literally every single one, was a pissing contest between these two groups and it drove me bonkers.

Now, I don't work out at all which is sad but at least I'm in a walkable city now and probably put away 5 miles a day.

So what is it with the old naked guys? Do they think the gym is a gay pick up joint or something?

My personal pet peeve is teenagers who are there for the social scene and aren't serious about working out.

I don't see how people lifting improperly can annoy so many of you. Just let them do their own thing. If they want to ask me for advice I'd be glad to give it, otherwise I just ignore them.

It doesnt really bother me, although I do snicker a little on the inside when I see some idiot doing deadlifts with his back completely hunched over. If only those people knew how badly they were fucking up their backs.

I totally forgot about that! Those guys just look foolish.

it bugs me more when i see guys who got prettied up before they came into the gym with their hair slicked back and they smell like they dumped a bottle of cologne on right before they came into the gym.

Things that annoy me

* people who take up a station/machine/bench/etc but just sit there and socialize rather than using it.
* people who don't put weights away after they use them.
* people who put dumbells in the wrong place on the rack.
* people with serious BO. one guy was so bad, you literally could smell him from across the gym.
* women who take up a station/bench/etc and do a workout with ridiculously light weight. they end up doing 3 sets of about 100 reps each, which takes FOREVER. if cardio machines have time limits, resistance training machines & benches should too.

Things that make me sad

* the guy who does the exact same stupid workout (e.g. bench, biceps, abs) every day for a year and wonders why he doesn't see any results.
* the women who try to do "spot reduction". for example, those that think doing just crunches will get them a flat stomach or doing just hip abductor machines will give them nice thighs.
* the people that workout in totally inappropriate clothing: jeans, khakis, button down shirts, etc.

Things i like

* fit girls in spandex
* fit girls in spandex doing squats
* fit girls in sports bras
* fit girls in sports bras doing bench press

I had another annoying thing today while I was doing my cardio. This women in like her 40's came to the strider next to me and I kept an eye on her. She was barely moving and constantly holding the pulse checker thing, her heart rate never got over 80 and she just kept on going reading her People and laughing at The View she was wathcing on tv.

I guess it just leads me back to people who don't bother to try and understand why they are doing what they are doing.

Man, the gym sounds like it can be an annoying place. I'm glad I've never concerned myself with what others are doing when I go there.

Hah, yeah, that cracks me up. People will lift fairly low amounts of weight and scream like they're having an orgasm. We get a lot of talkers at my gym too. Guys seem to go there just to pick up women.

The two things I CANNOT stand are

1) People not wiping down equipment, especially idiots covered in sweat who think it's cool not to wear a shirt.

2) People who do one set on a machine, then just sit at the machine doing nothing for 15 minutes before they do another set.

Well what I hate is when I come to the gym for say, a 15 minute workout. I'm not making excuses, but I am tired, and try and psyche myself up. The idea right now is to maintain the muscle right now until I get on Holiday and lift some more. I hate it when I see these people basically walking on those running platforms. For one thing, it means they're going to be there a while, and will just stare at me while I'm lifting weights. I lift (or pull, the cable machine I use is where you essentially "pull the bar down" maybe 9 slabs for the cable machines (I think each slab is 15 pounds, but I'm not sure) and this means I do sets of 10. So after 10, I get up and walk to something else. These people are staring at me, walking on their fatasses, and probably wondering why I'm not lifting more/harder.

Well whatever, it pisses me off. I have no idea any of the names of the machines which also kinda pisses me off, because I'm always saying, "That one machine..."

Does anyone have a website that names the machines?

Not sure about the names. I don't do any strength training outside of rowing and pushups

There's one thing I can't stad, people jabbering away on their cell phones.

And one thing that just bugs me, "tough guys" who try to lift as much as they can as fast as they can and scream while doing it.

lol. I feel ya. Back when I used to go to the gym I had the same thoughts.

Things I hated:

1) When I would struggle through 10 reps of some heavy lifting, and as soon as I'd get up, some dude next to me would stumble in my place, pick up the weight and easily power through 30 reps of twice the weight I pulled. Then he'd walk away with a face expression like he is trying to say: "And that's how you do it son...".

2) When people would sweat like pigs and drip sweat all over the exercise equipment. Then they'd walk away and not even bother to wipe off their filth.

3)When people would scream like morans with every rep and then drop the weight on the floor with a loud bang, then walk away gloating stuff like "What b*itch? WHAAAT?"

4)When girls would use the treadmill for hours on end listening to their ipod or using the exercise bike while reading the book. Why is the hell would you be using the treadmill for this long? Are you trying to burn all the fat in the world? How about some diversity in your exercise routine? There must be other ways to get fit aside from using a treadmill... (It's probably not my business to judge these girls but it just looks weird to me when I see someone running/cycling for 2 hours)

5)When my friends would make me feel like crap, and put me down for not being able to lift as much as them. People say not to pay any mind to this stuff and do your own thing, but how is it possible when people are insulting your dignity and your manhood?! How is it possible when your rep is on the line? How is it possible when slutty girls are looking at you?
I lifted as much as my friends even though I couldn't and off course I got very sick and had to stop going to the gym.

6) And finally the cell phones... don't even get me started on that one. I cant stand it in the gym, I cant stand it on the bus, and I cant stand it in college. It's things like that that make me wish there was no cell phones.. lol

If your personal "rep" or "manhood" depends on how much you can lift, get new friends. IF they're actually your friends, they're probably not serious. People can be assholes unintentionally. You sound a little oversensitive/too serious.

As for your manhood: do you like girls? Yes or no. There's your manhood. Who cares what other people think? It's what the girls think that really matters here.

In either case, witty comebacks are the best solution to both of the above.

As for slutty girls... WTF man. I'd enjoy the attention as much as any guy, but why is this such a major factor? Who cares what they think? They're slutty for a reason. If you go to the gym to impress girls and friends, you're going for the wrong reasons. Go for yourself. In terms of the opposite sex, I'd rather reel in quality girls. Being physically fit helps in this regard. Not to mention the health benefits.

Also, every girl in the gym may notice you, and may feel some physical attraction. I assure you that they do not care about you in the slightest at the end of the day.

Ex: When I go to the beach, I'll naturally notice hot chicks. If I can work up the balls to do so, I might approach one or two, but unless the one or two works out , at the end of the day I probably won't see or care about them again.

My advice: Go to the gym alone. If you don't enjoy going with friends, then what's the point in going with them? (And what's the point in having them as friends?)

Dude, just go to the gym by yourself. Stop worrying about what anyone else thinks of you. When I started lifting I weighed 120lbs and could only dumbell press 50lbs. Now I weigh 165lbs and can dumbell press 170lbs. Stay devoted, and before you know it, you'll be in the position to make fun of them.

This article is a good read for any of you guys (or gals) who frequent the gym. Admittedly, I have been guilty of a few gym faux pas in the past, but now I try and get in, do my reps, and get out. The extent of my socializing at the gym is asking, "How many more sets do you have?"

People being generally disrespectful of others wanting to use the equipment. Including:

1. Curling in the squat rack while others are waiting to actually do squats.
2. Not reracking weights.
3. Finishing a set on a machine then sitting on the machine catching your breath (while others are waiting).

I go to a small gym that is very quiet when I work out so I never have to wait for equipment or deal with too many irritations. The gym I used to belong to had more than it's fair share of screamers and posers, plus a few smelly and sweaty guys.

nothing irritates me more than the guys who leave 4 huge 50lb plates on the smith machine, really really high up (like above my head high) and then smirk as I struggle to take them off. assholes. If i was hot, they'd probably come over and help.

No re-rack rule at your gym?

There are signs but people generally do not clean up after themselves. There are even volunteers (I workout at the Y) who come down every now and again to put stuff back where it belongs.
