Annual Fraudulent charges on Credit Cards

It seems for the past 10 years or so almost every year I get one or more fraudulent charges on my CC. I'm with Band of America. In the past the process was a little complicated where they had to send you a letter where you filled out a claim and then it was knocked off within a few weeks (they did give a temp credit).

Now it's all electronic. Recently Someone tried to charge $1,900 and 1.27 for airplane tickets, the CC company denied it automatically. Seems they are getting better at it. One thing to note whenever this happened they sent me new credit cards with new numbers... In addition I've never had to pay for something I didn't buy. I'm just curious is this a common thing for people?

Chase has re-issued me new credit cards (new numbers) 3 times in the last ~8 years.

Amex would send me emails/app notifications/call me whenever they see something odd. They'd immediately cancel my card and overnight me a new one and clear out all of the charges.

I have never had any fraud transactions on my credit cards and I have used it at Target, Home Depot and Dairy Queen during their hack periods.

Not from my CC, but I've had my apple and Sony accounts both taken over. I wasn't liable for those purchases either and everything got straightened out fairly quickly in both cases.

Had it happen to me for the first time this year. Had to fill out and mail form for US Bank. I've had 2 other cards issue new numbers because they were involved in the big data breaches (Target/HD) but nothing fraudulent was charged to them.

the small charge was a test to see if the card was valid and the charge would be detected.

Once that cleared; then the larger charges are attempted on what is then known to be a valid account.

Yep,

I'm familare with this. I had it happened last year real bad. They did .27 cents and right after 600 dollars.

But I had a real local one done. Felt like it was someone I knew. When I lived in Baltimore I had charges appear for a Safeway and Food Lion. I disputed these but called the stores. I remember at Food Lion someone bought.....

Orange Fantana
Hanes Underwear

?????

Was worried because I'm relatively close to those areas.

It's entirely possible you got skimmed somewhere. Since the skimmers are actual hardware that need to be installed, it's quite possible they were local to that area.

Many many moons ago when I lived in southern MD, a new card (1 month old) received 1800 charges from a surf shop in Boca Raton. I got the charges removed with no hassle.

this was back when ards were verified via a booklet and imprints taken which were later sent to a bank for processing.

4 months later while in Miami, I stopped by the surf shop and they pulled the records.

The gear was UPS to an apartment in PG county within a couple of miles from a store where we first used the card. turns out that the apartment tenant(s) received UPS packages from all over. Police determined that a GF worked at the store and would not turn in some CC receipts that she received at her register until the following shift day or she would take the receipts during lunch/break to collect the info. Because the cash balance always checked out and the CC charges were always there, it was not being discovered

It's becoming more common-probably because more merchants are getting hacked. The card I usually use at Staples was compromised last week, but Bank of America caught it (and called and emailed me) before I even knew about it. The last couple of fraudulent charges I've had over the last five years or so were caught by the bank first.

I always use a credit card (not a debit card) and check the statements each month so I don't lose sleep worrying about fraud.

I cancelled a card that had an overzealous anti-fraud department. Despite numerous phone calls to them, they would block every charge at Newegg during a time frame when I was making one or more charges a week. They were adamant that they were doing their job very well so I chose the only option I had, I cancelled the card.

Understandable reaction, Newegg is the Best Buy of yesteryear that I miss.

I haven't had any fraudulent charges ever, actually. I have had some annoyances about purchases though, although I've only been blocked a single time. Generally, they just call me about it.

Most recently, Chase declined my iPhone 6 purchase and I had to call them to allow it. Unfortunately, I had to also call Verizon and have them recharge the card for it to go through. I much prefer their (Chase) usual method of allowing the charge and then asking if it was okay. I will usually get a call whenever I travel asking about purchases in the new city though.

Amex did the same thing to be except it was an email with a button to accept or decline the charges. That was pretty cool.

Just had to replace my Chase card two days ago. They emailed me a possible fraudulent charge and I logged in and found some weird $95 Hulu charge and another attempted charge that was pending. One quick call and it was all resolved with new card on the way. I had this card replaced back in Feb due to Target. Sure seems like it's getting more of an issue.
I had a fraudulent charge a while back from my credit union credit card and had to fill out two sheets of form by hand and fax to them to clear it off -- so I quit using their card.
Hope the banks and the CC companies fix this fraud issues soon, it's gotta be costing them tons of money.

My wife had a BoA card, and some scam software website made some charges on it. We'd never heard of the software and there was nothing like it on her computer. A google search turned up mostly other people with bogus charges. Despite this BoA hemmed and hawed and kept resending the same letter saying that the determined it was a legit charge and that the dispute had been closed, even though the phone rep said they were taking care of it. We decided to just cancel the card, since it was clear what happened when bogus charges showed up and the next charge might not be so small that it could easily be absorbed. They sent her a check refunding the charge a few months later.

The last one I got was actually a text message I could respond to, but I didn't trust a random number texting me so I called. =)

Damnit - Fraudulent purchases on my Capital One card for the second time this year. Someone went on a shopping spree in St. Louis today using a cloned card. Based on the retailers involved, they had children and love athletic shoes. :hmm:

Three transactions went through, and then the fourth one was denied. I am quite amazed at the bank's algorithms for fraud detection. I use the card for my business travels all over the country, and at all types of B&M and online retailers, and yet the card issuer detected the fraud pretty much immediately.

Stay alert!

Yeah it's pretty crazy. I went on an east coast trip without telling them and spent a ton of money without an incident. Someone cloned my card and went to Burger King and Smart 'n Final in Torrance, 30 miles away, and they flag it right away.

It's federal law. Credit card companies can't hold buyers responsible for purchases they didn't authorize. Not the same for debit cards.

For online purchases with your Bank of America credit card, use their Shopsafe feature which issues a unique single use credit card number.

Will this stop your fraudulent credit card issues? No.

What dark corners of the internet are you using your credit card on?

I've only had my card number hijacked once in the last 9 years, and my bank caught it before the charges even went through.
