anonymous access to SAMBA shares

Is there a way to share files with SAMBA to a network of Win9x and 2K/XP machines and
give them all access no matter who they are logged in as? Without modifying anything on the clients.

Thanks

Yes, Samba has anonymous access. SWAT has good docs for all the parameters available, as does samba.org and 'man smb.conf'

Ok, I setup a share like this, but I still get prompted for a passwd and valid username/passwords will not even work like they do on normal non-guest shares. This happens on both a WinME client and Win2k.

[share]
comment = shared files
path = /share
create mask = 0755
directory mask = 0755
guest ok = Yes
guest only = yes

Try setting 'map to guest'

map to guest (G)
This parameter is only useful in security modes other than security = share - i.e. user,
server, and domain.

This parameter can take three different values, which tell smbd(8)what to do with user
login requests that don't match a valid UNIX user in some way.

The three settings are :

- Never - Means user login requests with an invalid password are rejected. This is the
default.

- Bad User - Means user logins with an invalid password are rejected, unless the username
does not exist, in which case it is treated as a guest login and mapped into the guest
account.

- Bad Password - Means user logins with an invalid password are treated as a guest login
and mapped into the guest account. Note that this can cause problems as it means that any
user incorrectly typing their password will be silently logged on as "guest" - and will
not know the reason they cannot access files they think they should - there will have
been no message given to them that they got their password wrong. Helpdesk services will
hate you if you set the map to guest parameter this way .

in your [GLOBALS] in /etc/smb.conf have the following
guest ok = yes
map to guest = bad user
guest account = public

then do what you did on your printers or shares allowing anoymous access

I tired both "map to guest = bad user" and "map to guest = bad password"

but I still have the same problem.

I added this to my global section and it did not help

after you change your /etc/smb.conf always do a
killall -HUP nmbd
killall -HUP smbd
or use SWAT to restart the two services

when accessing samba anonymously the client must have a username and pw...doesn't
matter what it is. Point being..someone can't have a blank password and expect to print anonymously.

you need to send clear text passwords to the samba box...if your running 2000 there is an option in local policies for it...and if your running win9x there is a regedit for it

No, you need to setup the Samba box to send/recieve encrypted passwords which Samba has done by default for some time now.

They do not need a password to use guest shares, but you do need a unix account for the anonymous access (i.e. nobody), from the smb.conf man page:

Sections may be designated guest services, in which case no password is required to access them. A specified UNIX
guest account is used to define access privileges in this case.
