am i the only one who finds it disconcerting that multiple online payment portals are refusing to transfer funds to wikileaks?

i wonder what could have convinced these businesses that are in business to turn a profit to suddenly decide that wikileaks no longer deserves donations? could it be some government pressure?

Having your corporate brand associated with an organization deemed "traitorous" by your government. They may not be against Wikileaks, but it's bad for business. Not saying the guberment isn't gentley nudging them.

Visa/MC are actually quite strict on what sort of businesses are allowed to accept their cards. It's very hard for companies dealing with pornography, online pharmacies, tobacco, firearms, etc., to get merchant accounts. They end up paying huge rates for it, because it's higher risk and not attractive business.

You mean what Anonymous would do to Amazon by trying to shut them down?

Amazon simply removed Wikileaks from their servers. If the Wikileaks website broke the ToS in any way, then I honestly do not care. It's also quite possible that Amazon, a company that operates in the United States, does not wish to involve itself with the sort of questionable material.

I haven't been following is, but is wikileaks a "bad" organisation? Or is it just policing the government?

After the damage that Wikileaks has done to the US, to the damage to our relationships with our allies, to the jeopardy that they have put our troops in ... I hope that every outlet that they had to garner donations dries up and all of it's members get caught and incarcerated for long periods of time.

"We don't have enough forces," they whined.

Gotta love that.

Then, "We took down MC." "We took down Visa."

Funny, in both cases, my cards worked. So what are they accomplishing, if anything at all? From what I see, nothing.

They just took down their websites. The Visa and Mastercard payment system is separate from their website.

I see no problem with Visa, Mastercard, Paypal or Amazon deciding they don't want to do business with Wikileaks. If you look past the argument that the documents are stolen property and only consider the free speech aspect of it they are still within their rights to cut ties. Just because a group has a right to free speech doesn't mean that other people need to help them if they don't want to or have doubts about what the group is saying.

Nope. In fact, the only thing I'm mad about at Amazon is that the international Kindle is on backorder for 7-8 weeks last I checked. So now I will have to wait a while before I can send them more buckets of money.

Cry some more.

Seriously... trying to take down Amazon would be like trying to take down Google. They have distributed data centers with excess "on demand" capacity all over the place... what in the hell were they thinking?

Any business done or not done with Wikileaks was not going to directly impact the bottom line of any of these companies in the slightest. However look at all the free publicity and even some public sympathy they are getting now. Any time a mega-corp can garnish any sympathy at all from the public is well worth losing a few dollars.

You assume they stopped doing business with Wikileaks due to government pressure when in fact they could have decided that it's bad for business to be known as a pipeline for funds going to wikileaks. Or they could morally disagree with wikileaks and decide to cut ties based on their own principles. Finally, I don't care if you are Joe Plumber or the CEO of a multi-national corporation; if you get a call from the White House asking you to do a service to your country, chances are you are proud to do so. I don't automatically assume there was a need for any strong-arming.

Exactly. I do not think those guys realize the damage this can cause. Yeah, it's school boy antics, but they are also gonna respond like little school boys too.

That was kind of my point....what's been accomplished taking down the websites? A day of inconvenience? It's not like MC or Visa still don't have their call centers working......still have to ask, what is being accomplished by Anonymous with all this other than piss off the general public and make them hostile to anything Anon. is trying to do?

Wikileaks has done nothing the NYT hasn't done. I fully support them. They are a boon to the people of the US, even if the government doesn't want us to see that.
