Basic info
Mobo: Abit IC7 (non max3 or -G) bios rev 17
CPU: p4 2.4c
RAM:
Corsair XMS PC-3200C2 2x512
2-7-3-3

Settings
Ratio: 5:4
Strap: by cpu
agp/pci: fixed

Voltages:
cpu: different things tried...more below
vdimm: 2.8
agp: 1.6

Game accel stuff:
auto normal auto disab disab

========================================

that's what i kept the same while changing the cpu voltage.

@1.525 (default) it posts but reboots before windows
@1.55 it gets to windows but freezes before completely starting up
@1.6 windows stable but fails p95 almost immediately
@1.65 same as 1.6v but lasts a bit longer before failing p95

once i got to 1.65, i tried lowering all the memory settings to their lowest, 3-8-4-4. i got the same failure after a minute or so of p95

1.7v yields simliar results
========================================

i also have tried 240 for 2880MHz with the same settings as above

@1.55 i get 16 minutes before p95 fail.
@1.6 i get 18 minutes. i also tried running distributed.net (uses spare clock cycles...keeps cpu at 100%) and it got pretty hot...134F
it never got that hot @ 3.0GHz

========================================

so i'm kind of a newb with overclocking. i've read enough to know what i'm trying to do, but i don't know how to figure out what i should try now.

I have a real similar setup and had nothing but trouble with the memory. I had to settle with 250/200 running in dual channel mode as that memory would cause memtest failures at 202.

Try running memtest-86 to see if its your memory thats holding you back. If they fail at their rated speed using 5:4 timing then test one at a time and RMA the bad one.

You could also test whether its dual channel mode that fubaring you. Put the memory in single channel mode and try overclocking.

You could also test with just one stick in there. Make sure you memory voltage is at least 2.7 (recommendation from the RAM GUY at Corsair).

Otherwise it might just be your processor's limit.

Good luck

thanks, i seem to be getting consistent replies (from other forums where i posted the same problem) that the RAM is the issue. a couple of people have mentioned the possibility of a bad stick that only really shows up under overclocked conditions.

i'll try what you said...anyone else have a suggestion?

My system starts random restarts at 3GHz. I have Corsair 3200C2 ram and an IS7. Is it the mobo or ram? I've also given it 1.6V core and 2.8mem
