no, you are correct.
however those previous gen PIII chips only got better right about the time they became irrelivant to the mainstream.

i do think the northwood has room for an official 3.6ghz 1.55v chip tho.

Maybe even a 3.80c.

Those "old' CPUs were the mainstream for us budget-performance fiends. i remember my 1.2ghz Tualatin Celeron @ 1.5/1.6Ghz OUT-performing the "new" 1.8(+)P4s . . .

I think the same thing is/will happen with Northwood vs. Prescott . . . the very last steppings of the Northwoods should be cheap AND fast and i am looking forward to putting OFF my NEXT (major) UPgrade as long as possible while still having a reasonably powerful machine (through 2005). . . . i still think 4.0ghz will be "reasonable" in '05.

edit: BTW, what COOLing solution are you using?
I believe my generic PS and retail HS/fan is holding back my 2.80c's O/C to "only" 3.31Ghz at def.

im not sure but i think theres no problem with you stock HSF, coz i was able to OC my 2.8C to 3.5 using the stock HSF. try your PSU coz i have a PSU with 450 watts

yep, im sorry. didnt mean to insult that platform.
i myself have been "holding back" lately and ran a P4 2.4B chip way longer then most ppl did.
it can be really cool to "hold back" when your "slightly outdated" platform still keeps up with, or is even faster then the "latest and greatest"

again, no insults intended there.

EDIT: im using the thermalright sp-94 with a panaflo 92mm M1A.
2x 120mm & 1x 80mm panaflo case fans running in 7v mode.
enermax 550w psu.

No offence taken.

That's what "we" O/C'ers are all about - getting extra VALUE from our systems . . .

Of course, some of us - me - are content with a more "mild" O/C (I can't see ANY difference between 3.31 and 3.4Ghz . . . even encoding a DVD is only "seconds" difference and am content to run at def vcore). However, as my rig stays the same and the new ones get faster, i start to experiment with faster o/c'ing solutions . . .

I am actually looking forward to my cheap NW CPU upgrade next year (hopefully).
(By THEN, I should have a better PS and cooling both for case and CPU).

BTW, I ALWAYS look forward to reading your posts - they are quite helpful and informative.
(oops, I'm late for work - again - aloha)

Nice chip TR. Looking for a 2.8 that will do 250fsb on default too. Put it in my future SFF HTPC.

thx Thor

3528mhz / 252fsb completed 5 hours of prime95 on default voltage
gonna try for 254fsb next but chances are slim that it will pass.
253fsb might make it tho ~ we'll see

just for the sake of it, i tried 3570mhz 255fsb again....
prime95 failed in 8 mins

testing 254fsb right now ~ confidence level is low tho.
ill be amazed if 254 can run 5 hours error free.

I do not think that all 2.8c SL6Z5 are M0 stepping processors. I bought one from ZZF last month #3346A495; Costa Rica, pack date 1/1/04 with stepping: 5; Revision: 15 (not Revision: M0) according to Intels' chip ID.
No matter, I run it at 3.4GHz default voltage out of the box and have not pressed it any harder. Temps are fine, too.

253fsb also failed
252fsb 3.53ghz on default voltage is as far as itll go.
ill try max speed on 1.55v tomorrow.

excellent o/c . . . i think we all have something to look forward to with the last steppings of the NWs.

Where are you reading your voltage? I also have an Abit IC7 (minumum, not the Max) and it typically displays the voltage (signicantly) lower than Hardware Doc or MB monitor.

i read the vcore from cpuz or WHM while idle.
its typicly .025v lower then the bios setting (1.525v = 1.5v cpuz)

screenshot pics are obviously under full load.

nice OC thugs...just got my 3.4c couple weeks ago, and put it under my Vapo. does 3.94ghz at default voltage. only bad thing about this is my Max3 has some serious Vcore problems. the Vcore fluctuated rediculously. im talking .3v at a time up and down! if i increase Vcore to 1.6v at default speeds, it becomes unstable.

anyways, i fully volt modded the board, Vtt, Vdd, Vdimm, Vagp, and Electrolytic Capacitor mods along with the 3.3v, 12v, and 5v lines modded too with VR's on the Antec 550 TC. hopefully the Vcore mod will help gain stability over 4Ghz. my CPU should be back in this tuesday to start working on the setup on wednesday.

the reason i have said all this is because i am interested in this 2.8 of yours. ive got some killer BH-5 that does DDR520 2-2-2-5 at 3.3v memtest clean 32 passes. im looking for a CPU that will take me to 4Ghz with insane memory throughput. this chip of yours looks like that might be the one. i could run say 280-300fsb 5:4 and sky rocket the Vdd voltage because of the load. what was that thing you were talking about with nbs667 tricking the nb into thinking its Turbo? how does that work? never heard of that. very interesting because i always did want to run GAT with 5:4.

anyways, let me know whats up bro, cause im in the market, and ready to get rid of this 3.4

daos...

daos ~
i think ill be keeping this chip for awhile

on the Abit boards....
you cant run GAT with a mem ratio (nbs800 5:4), it only works in 1:1 mode.
however you can (maybe) run nbs667 5:4.
performance wise, that would be like running GAT turbo (which we cant do).

its just a nice lil tweak for those of us running the 5:4 ratio.
(its worth about 200 3dmarks on my system)

here are some PI scores with my prescott at 250 with the same chipset 5:4
if you want to compare

1M 38s
8M 6:52

Nice chip and oc Thugs.

Gotta love these MO's

What cooling are you using? 54C seems a little high for that vcore.

hiya john,
im using a Thermalright SP-94 with a Panaflo 92mm M1A.
temps are actually spot-on for my rig.

as we all know, P4 moboards dont read the CPU temp correctly.... link.

Forgot that you were running IC7.
I am running the same cooling on my P4C800 and get about 44C load, which
we know that Asus reads 5-7C low.

Looks like you finally found a C chip to replace you B's.
