Show and tell time.

After much trial and tribulations (who knew not putting the DIMM in a blue slot would decrease memory speed to 333mhz?!?), I've got a new 7800GTX system.

Specs:
AMD 3700+ San Diego
2GB OCZ 3200
Asus A8N-SLi Premium
2x10,000 RPM WD 74 GB RAID (140 GB space)
1x250 GB Maxtor
BFG 7800 GTX
SB Audigy 2 ZS
Plextor DVD writer

Stock 3DMark2005 score: 8121

For reference, my overclocked 6800GT was: 5404 Big improvement.

Thinking of running nTune. Guys think it's worth it? The only thing I've seen it do well so far is crash the machine.

its his money he can buy what the hell he likes, and im sorry but i dont see no ATI card touching a 7800GTX right now do you? and whats that? ATI's R520 wont be out for a while and i bet its not available straightaway and i bet its more expensive. 7800GTX seems like a good buy to me

its £399 where i live, i payed £300 for my 6800GT £99 for what amounts to twice the performance is something of a good deal

or are you filled with envy that crsgardner has a better rig than you?

Its always funny how someone with an inferior machine likes to come out and show their jealousy of someone with a better machine. Leave the guy alone - he wanted the 7800GTX and he got one - and he got a nice 3d mark score too.

What GPU/mem speeds does 3DMark report for your "stock" settings? CPL settings are meaningless right now on 7800GTX cards as the REAL speeds vary.

You make a good point that right now 7800GTX is the best card available. Someone who wants a new system now and can afford has no choice but to get it. However, the 2x performance increase is total BS. Maybe in like 3 games. The rest more like 30-50%.

Tim Sweeney and Nvidia says that the 7800GTX performs 2x better in the next UT, and I am inclined to believe the pair of them together That's not saying that 2x is available across the board, but you can bet if I had a real job and was sitting comfortably, then I would have one of these parked in my own rig as well!

Yeah but I wouldnt really call being at 30fps at 1600x1200 noAA/noAF in 2 of the 3 maps tested anything extraordinary. LINK This of course means that the minimum framerates make 7800GTX unplayable at even these settings.

Again by the time this game comes out, faster cards will be out there. The fact that Nvidia doesnt want to make any AGP 7800 versions and that ATI hasnt showed its hardware just yet, makes me want to wait until either of these gripes are resolved.

If nvidia is faster than R520, no big deal. But if R520 has 32 full pipes and h.264 enabled, it probably makes sense to wait until end of the summer considering that very few games actually benefit from 7800 right now. Given that gpu cycles have extended to almost 15 months now, waiting 2-3 months more for a card that'll be faster for the next 12 months isn't so bad I dont think.

i know sorry i meant WRT 3Dmark and things.....its nearly twice the performance, and in alot of games at the challenging resolutions its the same story. either way when you compare the prices (i payed £300 when the 6800GT was new) it seems your getting more for your money

I find it interestng that the 7800GTX can be both useless for current games and inadequate for future games all in the same post. I think those of you talking about how this card doesn't help current titles actually needs to see one in action. I have owned a 6800GT and now I own a 7800GTX, and I can assure you that the experience is quite different in terms of smoothness and IQ.

Otispunkmeyer,
I think you owe Bushman5 an apology. He was clearly talking about himself.

It's a lot better than the 6800U which can barely run it. Why buy a 68U when you can get a 78X and at least make the game playable?

hello, look at what they're benching it at...freakin high resolution with other stuff on. its not wonder the 6800ultra doesnt do well...jeez. Sorry, you might have to play it on 10x7 without AA/AF to get a full 60fps with a 6800ultra...jeez.

Great system! The only change I would have made would be to drop the 3700+ and one of the Raptors, and use the money toward an X2 4400+ instead.

My stock X850XTPE does 6500 in 3DMark05...nVidia cards are generally weaker in 01 and 05, but 24 pipelines doesn't hurt.

Man ASUS must be selling a lots of A8N-SLI Premiums.

I just got my A8N-SLI Premium, BFG Tech 7800 GTX OC, and Antec TP-II 550 yesterday. I'm getting ready right now to shut my PC down and start building my new system.

BTW, I picked up a SLI mobo but really have no plans to add a second GPU. I just wanted it just in case I changed my mind.

So other then putting the RAM in the wrong slots did you have any other problems?

I was also thinking the 7800 is not such a huge improvement over the 6800gt, but I dont think we've seen the whole picture yet. IMO, the 7800 will really shine when the resolutions and shaders get so big that the 6800 will come to a crawl. No, the 7800 won't magically get faster, but the 6800 will get so slow, that there will be a much bigger difference between the 2 cards. Anyway, if the r520 comes out with 32 pipes a few months later, you can still sell the 7800 for a good load of cash, and get a r520, which will definitely be a huge improvement if it has 32 pipes.
