There's a big controversy going around the Internet right now about a Silicone Valley startup selling Bodega machines, which is like a jumbo vending machine that replaces a corner store:

http://www.businessinsider.com/the-...bodegas-so-we-decided-to-hunt-one-down-2017-9

tbh that sounds awesome to me...I don't have to talk to anybody and can just get what I need and move on lol. I use Amazon Prime a lot, and I also use the self-checkout at the grocery store most often just so I can breeze through. I've grown to detest going to places like Best Buy because of all of the minor hassles you go through, like in that Dilbert comic.

I think you mean Silicon Valley and not the, uhh, other type of augmented one, though maybe you had spatulas in mind since you are the Kitchen Overlord.

Also with Walmart testing those giant pickup machines and Amazon likely to do more locker/pickup stuff in the future (especially with the Whole Foods acquisition) you may get your wish.

You know, it looked funny when I typed it, so I added the "e" at the end, and then I had some self-doubt, but I was already invested in the post, so I went with it anyway instead of googling it & banked on Cunningham's law instead

Toys ‘R’ Us Inc could file for bankruptcy in the coming weeks as pressure from skittish suppliers intensifies, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The company and its restructuring advisers are considering filing for Chapter 11 protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Richmond, Virginia, according to the WSJ report. (on.wsj.com/2h87WOt)

The privately-held toy retailer had previously said it was working with investment bank Lazard Ltd to help address its approximately $5 billion in debt, of which roughly $400 million comes due next year.

The potential Chapter 11 filing could be a result of the company’s suppliers tightening trade terms, including holding back on shipments unless the toy retailer is able to make cash payments on delivery, the newspaper reported.

The guy who runs this ran Dominos and was AD at Michigan. A nice history of running things into the ground.

I hate sales people but it is scary for those of you saying that talking to the cashier is too overwhelming.

They had the best selection of Legos when I was a kid, but Kmart and what not had them cheaper ....

If they focused their inventory on the toys you can't get at a big box store and kept margains low enough to move some volume, they could possibly be profitable ... but, trying to be a big box toystore with 90% inventory overlap with Walmart .... their business model does not have much longevity

I used to love walking down the video game aisle at TRU and flipping over the covers and looking at the backs of the boxes. Then the game you wanted wouldn't have a ticket below it, so you would go ask at the counter past the registers where you picked the games up, and they would have 1 last copy.

Going to the video game section at Toys 'R' Us was always the best part. My brother and I would practically bee line for that section every time, and play whatever game they had on display. I remember getting my first gaming "injury" there after I mashed buttons a little too hard on a Tekken demo and gave myself a blister on my thumb. I can also remember walking down the aisle with the big yellow (and blue?) tickets. The one thing that always stuck out to me was how much more expensive the RPGs were for the SNES and Genesis, and of course, I had no idea why back then.

oh god! nes and snes game costs were insane here in britain. £60 at one point which i think would be around 90 or 100 in US$

Yeah, but you got the sexy Super Famicom look the Japanese got. We paid less for our electronics, but got the really shitty looking US Super Nintendo. Built from the ground up to protect us clumsy Americans from setting our drinks on top of the system and spilling it all over the circuitry.

Well, its happened:

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-t...kruptcy-ahead-of-holiday-season-idUSKCN1BT2AV

"Toys ‘R’ Us Inc, the largest U.S. toy store chain, filed for bankruptcy protection late Monday, the latest sign of turmoil in the retail industry that is caught in a viselike grip of online shopping and discount chains.

The Chapter 11 filing is among the largest ever by a specialty retailer and casts doubt over the future of its about 1,600 stores and 64,000 employees. It comes just as Toys ‘R’ Us is gearing up for the holiday shopping season, which accounts for the bulk of its sales.

“While today’s decision does not necessarily mean it is game over for Toys ‘R’ Us, it brings to a close a turbulent chapter in the iconic company’s history,” said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail."

I haven't shopped at Best Buy in forever. I went there the other week cause I had time to kill while waiting for someone. I saw the UE Wonderboom for $79. $20 cheaper than my beloved Amazon! So I actually bought something at Best Buy and saved money. I had no idea!

Then I went to Costco and they were selling 2 UE Wonderbooms together for $140, and Amazon still had them only at full price for $99. Costco I expected it from but Best Buy? No way Jose!

Amazon usually temporary adjusts their prices so they won't be undercut and everyone walks away thinking they are always the lowest. The minute their competitor goes back to MSRP, so does Amazon.

Most big stores match Amazon so I buy most stuff locally. According to the statistics, I am one of the few people in my demographic that isn't a prime member.

I guess they'll switch over to adult toys/novelties.
Time for those Toys-R-Us kids to grow up.

You can also price match at Best Buy using sites like Amazon and Newegg as long as it is actually sold by the company and not some third party. Since Amazon charges full sales tax now, paying less (or nothing ) in taxes isn't a benefit anymore.

I price matched two 4K Blu-rays the other day as both were cheaper on Amazon.

BB price matching is management discretion and I've had them refuse in the past to match another retailer.

I never bought from Toys R Us growing up - I always found their prices to be significantly higher than typical retail (Target). same goes for Game Stop and those types of stores - always ridiculously overpriced.

The Toys R Us in my fair city had the armed guard at the door. I thought that odd for a toy store.

I've never had an issue with it. In my experience, as long as it's a local B&M store or an online retailer that's on their approved list, you can get it matched. The prior can be an issue as it means that I'd be unable to have any in-store only deal from Fry's or Microcenter matched because they're too far away from me. The latter means that deals you see at places like Abe's of Maine are probably not going to fly unless you're lucky.

I've been getting a bit tired of Amazon lately, so the idea of ordering locally doesn't seem too bad. My frustrations mostly arise from receiving products that are ordered as new, but don't seem to be new... and may even be defective. I ordered an SB8200 modem (no PUMA problems and supports high speeds), but I've been having issues with it the whole time. I ordered another one as a replacement, and the replacement's box actually seems to be sealed properly.

This is one reason I don't price match. Irregular variables fuck up the system, and piss me off. I either accept your price and buy, or go somewhere else. If you want me to buy from you, be competitive. I'll sometimes haggle at the flea market, but I don't feel like dealing with it most times.

Small businesses/suppliers are going to be in a lot of hurt (10 cents on the dollar, if they are lucky) -

Linda Parry Murphy is already feeling the pain from the bankruptcy filing. Her company, Product Launchers, which is based in White Plains, N.Y., with a satellite office in Manhattan, is a sales representative and distributor for manufacturers and imports who sell to Toys R Us. Her clients are owed more than $1 million by Toys, and it looks like they will receive only a small fraction of that amount as a result of the bankruptcy.

“Our clients are the ones getting screwed,” she said. “They’re the ones owed millions and will be lucky to see 10 cents on the dollar. Not every supplier is as large as Mattel or Hasbro, who can more easily absorb this blow.”

And big ones (such as Mattel and Hasbro) too - https://finance.yahoo.com/news/traders-making-huge-bets-toys-132139891.html
