I think intelligent people can separate a bow of respect from a bow of deference to superiors. Of course, some people around here (Um, Cad?) don't fall into this group. In other news, wow, this thread is really going places.

Damn people. We are Americans. We fought a revolution against a monarchy so that we would never be sub servant to one again. American leaders do not bow to foreign leaders in any way. We don't bow before royalty. We don't lower our flag to other flags (re 1936 Olympics).

Obama continues on his apaolgy tour of the world and this is just another stop. He doesn't defend the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (which saved 1m+ lives since we didnt have to invade). Hell, he doesn't even like the idea of victory in a war as his comments to ABC News show "I'm always worried about using the word 'victory,' because, you know, it invokes this notion of Emperor Hirohito coming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur". (Oh, and he's not that bright because Hirohito didnt sign the surrender, a general and a foreign minister did).

No. It's entirely appropriate to call out the leader of our country for conveying that a different leader is "superior".

Talk about grasping at straws... you really think this means anything more than a simple show of respect?

My only issue with it is that it seems disingenuous to bow b/c it is not something we do from our culture. This is what politicians do though, so I guess we should just let them play their little games of make believe. I don't think that it shows weakness or anything though. Quite frankly, I really don't care if it does show weakness. It really isn't a big deal and nothing should be made of it.

How can you be this blinded by partisanship and Obama hate? ODS is in strong showing in this thread.

What Obama was saying he didn't want to use the word 'victory' is that when Afghanistan or Iraq end it won't be with a surrender on a battleship, it will be a transition to stable government. He was warning against unrealistic expectations as to what success would be, not that he doesn't like winning.

Did you honestly think that America's president doesn't want America to win in its wars? Really? Doesn't that seem a little crazed to you?

I think it is a brilliant move! Ya do realize Obama was trying to make a point? America with all its might is still a people with respect. I don't know what he gains by that show of respect but I'm sure he has some agenda like maybe making sure the oil continues to be denominated in Dollars or some such.

I'd not bow but then I'm pig headed proud Irishman and know I'm better than everyone...

Unfortunately it is.

Here is the reasoning:

When you bow to someone that low you show you are inferior to them. That is the perceived notion that goes on here. Even if the Saudi King or the Japanese person had bowed back, the fact that he bowed low shows to them that their leaders are superior to ours.

Your reason is ignorant and totally goofy!!

It's really embarrassing when he bows like this. He looks like a slave. At the least he shows himself to be a pussy, and he gives the appearance that the US is subservient to a foreign nation.

With all the things which go in the world, I tend to ignore the trivial. This is trivial.

Health care? Bailouts? Sure. Bowing? "Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz"

Bowing to see eye to eye is acceptable. I have stated that. It is a sign of respect.

Bowing much lower (sadly in both cases) is seen as a sign of being inferior. Why? The King and Emperor do NOT bow below anyone. They are perceived as being the highest ranked people in their countries and as thus will not bow that low. They most likely feel their country is the best in the world and thus would not insult their country (any homer should).

From the video of the Saudi King I saw, the King did not bow anywhere near as low as Obama. With the Japanese Emperor it may be harder to tell as he is short but in the picture he made a friendly gesture bow, but did not bow anywhere near the same as Obama.

They bow, whereas we salute in this country moreso. Same principle almost. The subordinate starts a salute, a superior starts and finishes the salute then the subordinate finishes his salute. A little different then the Eastern ways but the way it is done never changes.

Anyone who is this worried about our President being seen as a pussy is a pussy themselves. One could write a thesis on projection from this post alone. Why don't you wipe it off, and stop embarrassing yourself?

You'd know all about being a pussy, wouldn't you? You should. That's our opinion of you.

There is a difference. I slight bow and or nod is one thing (show of respect) but a very deep bow like he did to both the king and now in Japan looks like deference.

But it sure is great to see all the Obowma apologists trying to spin this as nothing. I expected nothing less from them...

Lame personal insults from an Obama boot licker. If you like to see America subservient to foreign nations, with a serial bowing President, you must be in heaven right now.

Some of us Real Americans like to see America strong, respected, and a president with some self control and tact.

But our "image" is important. That's what the left has been chanting for the last 8 years - no?

Yes, and he made our image better.

Seriously, what kind of issues do you have that you are personally insulted by the leader of the USA showing respect to two smaller countries who we are obviously NOT subservant towards?

I think Obama wants to be out of Afghanistan, no matter what. Why the fuck is he micromanaging the situation? The left in this country hasn't been interested in winning a war since WW2.

Perhaps if you think of a Zen Master or even a 10th Degree Black Belt Martial Arts person... That person does not loose their self esteem by their acts of respect or by being humble... They learn and they know who they are!
If you feel you've lost something by Obama's actions then I'd suggest he gave your self esteem away cuz he must have had it to give it away... ya better run go get it fast and next time learn to keep it under guard...
